As the Easter weekend approaches, South Africa’s roads are set to become busier and, unfortunately, more hazardous. With families and holidaymakers planning their travels, the Vehicle Testing Association (VTA), a proud member of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), is stepping up with its annual Free Safety Campaign to help ensure that vehicles are road-ready for the festive season. Running from 11 April to 17 April 2025, this initiative offers a much-needed safety net for drivers who want to ensure their vehicles are in optimal condition before embarking on their holiday journeys.
A Proactive Approach to Road Safety
According to Julian Pillay, National Director of the VTA, the Easter period is historically associated with a significant number of road accidents. The VTA’s Free Safety Campaign is a proactive and practical initiative aimed at reducing road fatalities during this critical time.
“The Easter holidays are, unfortunately, linked to a high number of road accidents. As the VTA and RMI, we are fully committed to promoting road safety, and this campaign is a simple but effective way to help motorists ensure their vehicles are in a safe condition before they travel,” says Pillay.
The initiative is designed to give South African motorists peace of mind before they head out onto the roads. Participating VTA/RMI vehicle testing stations across the country will offer free, safety-critical vehicle checks, ensuring that essential components of the car are functioning properly and reducing the risk of accidents caused by vehicle-related issues.
What’s Included in the Free Safety Check?
While this inspection is not a comprehensive roadworthiness test, it is a focused check-up designed to highlight potential hazards and prevent costly damage or, more importantly, accidents that could result in serious harm. The free safety checks cover several vital components of the vehicle, including:
- All lights: Ensuring that headlights, brake lights, and indicators are working correctly.
- Seat belts: Checking for proper functioning to safeguard passengers.
- Wipers: Verifying that wiper blades are in good condition for clear visibility.
- Tyres: Inspecting tread depth and overall tyre condition.
- Brakes: Testing brake efficiency and ensuring proper response.
- Steering mechanism: Ensuring smooth and safe steering performance.
- Suspension: Checking for stability and vehicle control.
- Exhaust system: Ensuring that there are no leaks or hazards from the exhaust.
- Wheel alignment: Identifying any issues that could affect driving stability.
These checks address some of the most critical aspects of vehicle safety, which, if overlooked, can result in dangerous driving conditions.

A Few Minutes Could Save Lives
Pillay stresses that this is a proactive step that could prevent accidents before they happen. He encourages motorists to take advantage of this opportunity to ensure their vehicle is in top condition.
“By taking just a few minutes to have your vehicle inspected, you could be preventing a serious incident. It’s a small step that could save lives,” he adds.
This campaign is not just about promoting vehicle safety; it’s about a collective effort to reduce road fatalities across South Africa. By ensuring that cars are in safe, working order, the VTA aims to prevent the heartbreak and tragedy that often accompanies Easter-related accidents.
Find Your Nearest Testing Station
Motorists who are eager to get their vehicles checked before hitting the road can contact their regional RMI office to find a participating vehicle testing station. However, it’s important to note that, at present, there are no participating stations in the provinces of Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Free State, and Eastern Cape. The VTA hopes to expand its services to these areas in the future.
Pillay concludes, “Let’s work together to make safety a priority this Easter. Have your vehicle checked before you travel.”
A Call to Action
As South Africa braces for an influx of Easter holiday traffic, the VTA’s Free Safety Campaign is an essential reminder that ensuring the roadworthiness of your vehicle should always be a priority. With just a few minutes dedicated to a quick safety inspection, motorists can drive with confidence, knowing that they have done their part to ensure their own safety—and that of others on the road. Don’t take chances this Easter. Visit your nearest participating station and make safety a priority.
