AFTER a two-month break in the season, the Engen Volkswagen Cup field is raring to go. East London hosts round four of the Super Series on Saturday, 3 July, and the halfway mark in the national season.
With three rounds complete, Port Elizabeth’s Daniel Rowe (11 – Ferodo Racing) is leading the series with an eight point lead on his teammate Sheldon van der Linde (16 – Ferodo Racing) currently in second spot.
Jano van der Westhuizen (15 – Kwikfix) and Dewald Brummer (2 – MAD Racing / Grand Prix Models) will be fighting it out for third position in the championship. The pair are on identical points and will be trying to out-manoeuvre each other – while under pressure from Tasmin Pepper (31 – PG Glass) who is just a single point behind them.
With a place amongst the top three available, these racers will be involved in a battle of wits and strategy as they attempt to shift the balance in their favour.
The Masters championship leader is Trevor Bland (M6 – PG Glass / Suburban Panelbeaters) who holds seventh place overall in the championship while leading the Masters category. Bland leads the Masters by a single point, but is three points behind Mathew Hodges (M3 – ITR Africa / 959 Panelbeaters) in the overall standings.
At the PE round of the championship, Bland claimed the overall top spot for the Masters on the day but the East London round is shaping up to be a battle for dominance as Hodges is no stranger to being amongst the leaders.
For the field of Engen Volkswagen Cup racers, the East London race meeting provides them with an opportunity to push their Volkswagen Polo Vivo race cars to the limit as they tackle the high speed sections of the circuit. Handling will remain important as the racers attempt to gain advantage on their identical Volkswagen Polo Vivo counterparts in the technical sections.
