Car Ownership Remains Crucial for Young Adults Amid Rising Challenges
12th July 2024, London: Contrary to industry concerns, the latest consumer analysis from Auto Trader reveals that car ownership remains a top priority for young adults aged 17-24. An overwhelming 90% of respondents in this age group still view owning a car as essential, with more than two-thirds intending to use their vehicles as much or more than they did last year. However, the path to ownership is becoming increasingly difficult due to escalating used car prices, driving test backlogs, and higher insurance premiums.
In a survey of over 2,000 young people, 90% emphasized the importance of owning a car, primarily to facilitate mobility (70%) and to gain independence (67%). Additionally, more than half (54%) cited the sheer enjoyment of driving as a key motivation. The unreliable public transport network, exacerbated by ongoing train strikes, was also a significant factor, with 50% of respondents highlighting it as a major reason for needing a car.
Encouragingly for the automotive industry, the demand for car ownership among young people shows no signs of diminishing. In fact, 70% of surveyed young adults reported that owning a car has become even more important in the past year. This is more than double the percentage of drivers over 45 (31%) who felt the same. Furthermore, nearly four times as many young people (43%) claimed to use their cars more frequently today than they did a year ago, compared to just 12% of older drivers.

Mounting Barriers for Young Drivers
Despite strong demand, young people face significant challenges in acquiring their first car. According to the DVLA, the backlog for driving tests is projected to grow, with an estimated gap of over 1,100,000 tests by the end of 2025. Even after passing their tests, many young drivers are priced out of the market. Data from Auto Trader indicates a shortage of affordable cars, largely due to reduced new car production during the COVID-19 pandemic, which continues to impact the retail market and stock levels. For instance, while 58% of surveyed young buyers spent less than £11,000 on their cars, the availability of vehicles in this price range on Auto Trader has decreased by nearly half (46%) since January 2016. The situation is even more severe for cars under £5,000, with stock levels dropping by 75%.
Rising insurance costs further compound the affordability issue. Premiums for young drivers have surged at twice the rate of the average driver, with 18-year-olds experiencing an 84% increase in premiums over the last year, and 17-year-olds facing a 98% hike.
Removing Existing Barriers
While these obstacles are likely to persist, the automotive industry can play a crucial role in making car ownership more accessible for young people by addressing traditional barriers. Enhancing transparency around finance options is vital. Auto Trader’s research shows that over a third of young consumers who paid cash for their cars did so because they were unaware of available finance options. Additionally, nearly two in five young buyers did not understand the finance options, and half believed that financing would delay their purchase.
Creating a more convenient and flexible car buying process is also essential. Auto Trader’s findings indicate that young drivers are more inclined to complete the car buying journey digitally. Over half (53%) have checked if a car advertised online is available, compared to just 20% of over-65s, and 42% prefer to complete tasks online, such as paying a deposit to reserve a car, compared to 26% of older drivers.
Marc Palmer, Auto Trader’s Head of Strategy & Insight, commented: “There’s been speculation that young people are losing interest in car ownership, but our research shows this is far from true. The desire for independence and freedom that comes with having a car is stronger than ever among young people. However, the increasing difficulty of acquiring a first car is a challenge the industry must address. By making the car buying process more transparent, convenient, and sensitive to the unique barriers young people face, we can help this important and growing audience enter the market.”
The automotive industry stands at a critical juncture. By adapting to the needs of young buyers and removing existing barriers, it can ensure that the next generation of drivers has the opportunity to experience the freedom and independence that car ownership provides.
