Nestled within the tranquil surroundings of Johannesburg’s Thaba Eco Hotel, the two-day FIM CTI Technical Steward Seminar is in full swing, laying the groundwork for the South African Safari Rally—an eagerly awaited highlight on the World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC) calendar. Beginning on 14 May, this landmark training initiative has drawn 18 technical delegates from across the African continent, united by a common goal: to raise the bar in motorcycle sport safety, expertise, and inclusivity.
Facilitated by FIM Instructor Andres Zalazar of Argentina, the seminar has brought together representatives from South Africa, Kenya, Namibia, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Notably, the group includes six women—a milestone that underscores the increasing participation of women in technical and leadership roles in motorsport across Africa.
Day one was dedicated to comprehensive theoretical instruction, while today shifts focus to hands-on practical training—providing a vital bridge between understanding regulations and applying them in real-world rally environments. The seminar is a cornerstone of the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme’s (FIM) and FIM AFRICA’s long-term strategy to empower officials across the African Continental Union (CONU), promote diversity, and ensure that the continent is well-prepared to host and support international-calibre competitions.
A Proud South African Delegation
South Africa’s own cohort is a dynamic blend of emerging talents and experienced hands, reflecting the nation’s commitment to excellence and inclusivity in motorsport. Among the standout figures are Nicole Du Plessis, Kate Moleme, and Miranda Du Plessis—trailblazing women contributing to a new era of representation in the sport’s technical ranks.
“The South African delegation is a true reflection of inclusivity, diversity, and technical excellence in motorcycling sport,” says Jacqui Monteiro, Secretary General of FIM Africa and Operations Manager at Motorsport South Africa. “These individuals are not just participants—they are pioneers shaping the future of the sport on the continent.”
Younger delegates such as Ashley Brandt, Siya Tshabalala, Mosa Letsholo, and Qelile Mvala bring a fresh perspective and are emblematic of a new generation of officials. Their enthusiasm and adaptability position them to thrive as the sport continues to evolve.
Veterans Peet van der Walt, Alfie Swanepoel, and Ivan Hartley bring critical institutional knowledge to the seminar, while newcomer Len van Driel has embraced the opportunity with humility and curiosity. “I did not expect this opportunity so soon,” Len says. “It’s a privilege. The most valuable insight for me has been understanding the depth of technical preparation required to ensure the safety and competitiveness of FIM-sanctioned events.”
Voices of Impact: Delegates Reflect
For many of the delegates, the chance to learn directly from an international expert like Zalazar has proven transformational.
Ashley Brandt emphasised the value of the practical training. “Being taught in a way that allows you to understand not just the ‘how’ but the ‘why’ behind technical checks has been extremely valuable. The practical element really resonated with me,” she said.
Miranda Du Plessis called the seminar “possibly one of the most informative trainings I have attended so far,” while Nicole Du Plessis highlighted the significance of international collaboration. “Having this level of training on the African continent is vital. What stood out to me most is how strongly the FIM prioritises rider safety.”
Beyond the technical skills, the increased visibility of women in the sport stood out as a key achievement. “If we want to grow the number of female competitors, we also need more female officials,” noted Ashley. Nicole echoed the sentiment: “The seminar offered women the opportunity to be a part of a predominantly male sphere, and this can only open more doors going forward.”
For the South African delegates, diversity isn’t a buzzword—it’s a catalyst for growth. “Diversity is extremely important,” said Miranda. “It allows us to break away from a one-track mindset and consider multiple perspectives.”

With the South African Safari Rally around the corner, the timing could not be more apt. For those involved, it is clear: the road ahead for African motorsport is paved with passion, professionalism, and potential. As newcomer Len van Driel aptly put it, “This kind of training is crucial in attracting younger and newer officials. As technology evolves, so must we—and we’re ready.”
With its blend of experience, energy, and an inclusive ethos, the African motorsport community is well-positioned to rise to new heights. And if the calibre of this week’s seminar is anything to go by, the future of the sport on the continent is in very capable hands.
