London, 30 September 2024 – eBay has announced the eagerly awaited shortlist for its 2024 Van Conversion of the Year Awards, celebrating ingenuity, craftsmanship, and a passion for turning humble vehicles into exceptional mobile spaces. This year’s shortlist, featuring a diverse array of entries, will culminate in one lucky winner walking away with the £10,000 cash prize, while shortlisted entrants each receive £250 eBay coupons to further enhance their creations.

The Van Conversion of the Year Awards shine a spotlight on the most impressive Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) conversions across the UK. Categories such as Best Electric Vehicle, Most Creative, Best Budget-Friendly Conversion, and Best Enterprise Conversion highlight the sheer range and imagination behind each transformation. With an emphasis on design, practicality, and style, eBay’s panel of expert judges faced a tough task in selecting this year’s finalists.

Judges: A Panel of Renowned Experts
The judging panel, led by TV presenter and architect George Clarke, alongside iconic car designer Peter Stevens and eBay’s Vehicle Parts and Accessories Category Lead Laura Richards, had the challenging job of whittling down the many entries to just seven winners across the categories. Clarke, known for his work on architectural transformations, noted that this year’s competition featured “an even more diverse line-up of conversions,” from eco-conscious electric campers to innovative mobile businesses.

Stevens, responsible for designing the legendary McLaren F1, remarked, “The variety and standard of entries this year are truly outstanding. The personality each conversion exudes is remarkable, and the winner will undoubtedly inspire others to embark on their own personal van projects.” Richards, meanwhile, celebrated the DIY spirit of the entrants, each of whom utilised eBay’s vast catalogue of parts and accessories to bring their creative visions to life.

Category Highlights
Best Electric Vehicle Award
Winner: Joe Edwards, Wiltshire – Nissan E-NV200
Joe’s electric camper showcases an eco-conscious vision, built around a powerful 40kWh battery system. His use of eBay parts, including a 3000w inverter and 250W solar panel, allows for fully off-grid camping without relying on fossil fuels. Joe’s standout feature is the artistic mountain-inspired lamp, a handcrafted homage to natural materials that complements the van’s sustainable ethos.

Best Bespoke Build Award
Winner: Jack Lydon, Essex – Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
Jack’s Sprinter is no ordinary camper; it doubles as a professional DJ booth on wheels. His conversion reflects both his love for music and his desire to travel across Europe, recording unique mixes at each destination. The fusion of high-quality craftsmanship with custom audio equipment has created a one-of-a-kind mobile recording studio, with Jack’s project made possible through eBay’s extensive range of parts.

Most Creative Award
Winner: Josie Rose, Kent – Mercedes-Benz Vario
Josie’s transformation of her Vario minibus into a “cottage on wheels” is nothing short of enchanting. With no prior experience, she used eBay parts to add whimsical, boho-chic details that make her van stand out. Josie hopes her creative DIY build will inspire other female van lifers to embrace their unique styles and confidently take on their own projects.

Weekend Wanderer Award
Winners: Tom and Emma Coy, North Lincolnshire – Volkswagen Crafter
Instead of hosting a traditional wedding, Tom and Emma invested in a Volkswagen Crafter and converted it into a fully liveable camper for European adventures. Their off-grid van, equipped with a hidden toilet and full shower room, is a testament to their DIY prowess, with every aspect designed for maximum comfort during extended trips.

Best Budget-Friendly Conversion Award
Winner: Tom Maisey, Sheffield – Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
Tom’s vision for his van conversion was centred on creating a getaway vehicle that blends functionality and design. Using eBay-sourced parts, Tom’s van is a model of efficiency, providing all the essentials for weekend escapes without breaking the bank. His meticulous attention to detail, combined with a focus on space optimisation, makes this conversion both practical and stylish.

Best Enterprise Conversion Award
Winners: Trevor and Tracy Hatten, Gloucestershire – Bedford CA
Trevor and Tracy’s Bedford CA, lovingly nicknamed “Betty,” has been reborn as a mobile bakery. After years working in dementia care, Tracy’s passion for baking led the couple to convert the vintage van into The Baking Bird, a charming, fully functional business on wheels. With unique touches such as a custom side panel for serving coffee, this van is a true labour of love.

Special Recognition Award
Winner: Niall Seymour, Kent – US School Bus Conversion
Although not eligible for the main prize, Niall’s conversion of an American school bus into a family holiday vehicle deserved a special mention from the judges. Imported from Texas and turned into a bespoke mobile home, the bus features several custom-built elements, all achieved with eBay-purchased parts. The project, completed with no prior building experience, has captured the imagination of onlookers wherever it goes.

Final Thoughts
As the countdown to the announcement of the overall Van Conversion of the Year winner continues, eBay’s 2024 shortlist is a testament to the creativity and resourcefulness of the UK’s DIY van converters. Each finalist represents a unique approach to transforming a vehicle into something extraordinary, from eco-friendly electric campers to fully-fledged mobile businesses.

The winner, set to be revealed soon, will not only walk away with £10,000 but will inspire a new generation of DIY enthusiasts to embark on their own van conversion journeys. As George Clarke aptly put it, “This year’s entrants have shown just how far imagination and a bit of DIY can go in turning an ordinary vehicle into something truly special.”

This year’s awards showcase the diversity and ingenuity of the van conversion community, with each entry reflecting a passion for design, creativity, and the great outdoors.
