PRETORIA, South Africa – Tuesday, 26 November 2024
The Defender’s legendary capability and unyielding spirit have been reaffirmed with the successful completion of the Kingsley Holgate Foundation’s Afrika Odyssey Expedition. Spanning an extraordinary 60,000km across 24 African countries, the year-long humanitarian journey exemplifies the Defender’s ability to thrive in the world’s most challenging environments while bringing hope to underserved communities.
At the heart of the expedition lay a life-saving mission: the distribution of 15,880 insecticide-treated mosquito nets to vulnerable women and children. Each net protects an average of one mother and two children, highlighting the expedition’s vital role in combating malaria, one of Africa’s deadliest diseases.
Heart and Courage in Action
Nicknamed Moyo and Isibindi—meaning “heart” and “courage”—the two Defender 130 D300s transported not only mosquito nets but also ‘Rite to Sight’ reading glasses and Wildlife Art templates. The expedition touched lives in nations across the continent, from Angola and Mozambique in Southern Africa to Chad and South Sudan in Central Africa, and further west to Cameroon, Ghana, and Nigeria.
For expedition leader Ross Holgate, the journey was a true test of grit, determination, and engineering excellence.
“This expedition was gruelling and tested the limits of both man and machine,” Holgate recounted. “Our Defenders never faltered, whether navigating the Congo’s flooded landscapes, conquering the Sahara’s punishing 50°C temperatures, or enduring the unforgiving roads to Juba. Their reliability was our lifeline.”
Engineering Excellence in Extreme Conditions
The Defender 130’s engineering prowess was crucial to the expedition’s success. Holgate praised the vehicle’s air suspension system, which absorbed the impact of potholes and uneven terrain, allowing drivers to withstand long hours behind the wheel.
With over 10,000 hours logged in the driver’s seat during the Afrika Odyssey, Holgate declared the Defender the ultimate choice for the Kingsley Holgate Foundation.
“We’ve driven countless vehicles in our 40-plus expeditions, but the Defender remains unmatched. Its capability is unparalleled, whether wading through rivers, traversing desert dunes, or navigating treacherous mountain passes.”

A Legacy of Exploration
The Afrika Odyssey is the latest chapter in a storied partnership between the Kingsley Holgate Foundation and Land Rover, spanning more than 40 expeditions. In the past three years alone, the team has logged over 150,000km in the new Defender across three monumental journeys.
- Mzansi Edge Expedition: A 16,000km, 80-day journey around South Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic, aimed at delivering essential food parcels to vulnerable communities.
- Defender Transcontinental Expedition – Hot Cape to Cold Cape: A daring adventure from Cape Town to Nordkapp, Norway, the northernmost drivable point on Earth.
- Afrika Odyssey Expedition: A 12-month odyssey through diverse landscapes, from swampy forests and towering dunes to rocky passes and Arctic cliffs.
A Vehicle Built for Purpose
From its inception, the Defender has been synonymous with adventure and resilience. Its performance during the Afrika Odyssey underscores why it remains the Kingsley Holgate Foundation’s vehicle of choice.
As the Foundation continues its mission to uplift lives and explore uncharted territories, the Defender stands as a beacon of durability and compassion, embodying the spirit of adventure while making a tangible difference in the world.
