The Dacia Hipster Concept has made an immediate mark on the automotive world, scooping the coveted ‘Design of the Year’ award at the 2026 TopGear.com Awards. Revealed globally just weeks ago, the compact electric vehicle stood out in a competitive field of high-profile supercars and upmarket SUVs, proving that simplicity and functionality can triumph over sheer extravagance.
Announced at a London ceremony on 25 November, the award celebrates the Hipster’s refreshingly honest approach to car design. With its compact three-metre footprint, four fully usable seats, flexible boot space, and lightweight construction, the Hipster is purpose-built for real-world mobility – an ethos that struck a chord with both judges and the public alike.
Jason Barlow, Editor-At-Large at TopGear.com, commented on the win: “The Hipster addresses a significant issue: even cheap electric cars are still too expensive to work as mass mobility solutions. So, this award isn’t just because we love the way it looks, it’s because it represents a shift in priorities. The interior is basic without being monastic, the size unlocks a virtuous circle of weight saving, and the range is small but all you need around town.”
The Hipster embodies Dacia’s philosophy that great design doesn’t need to be complicated. Its clean horizontal front end, strap-style door handles, and recyclable Starkle® body protection showcase purposeful styling. Inside, smart solutions continue, from vertical glazing and a bench-style front seat to the brand’s ‘Bring Your Own Device’ connectivity system, keeping the car practical, cost-effective, and environmentally considerate.
David Durand, Dacia Design Director, reflected on the recognition: “Hipster has won against some seriously cool and beautifully designed cars this year, which makes this recognition even more meaningful. It shows that simplicity and honesty still have the power to stand out. Hipster proves that good design isn’t about adding more. It’s about focusing on what really matters to real people.”
The Dacia Hipster Concept marks a significant step in the brand’s mission to make electric mobility accessible and relevant to everyone. With its clever packaging, minimal environmental impact, and strong, instantly recognisable proportions, the Hipster offers a compelling alternative to the ever-larger and heavier vehicles dominating today’s roads – all while demonstrating that less can indeed be more.
