Continental is leading the charge in reducing traffic noise with its latest tyre innovations, offering drivers a quieter, more comfortable ride without compromising safety. Noise, alongside air pollution, is one of the most significant burdens on people and the environment, particularly in urban areas where traffic hum is a constant presence. The World Health Organization ranks traffic noise as Europe’s second-largest environmental health risk, and in megacities across Asia and Latin America, it remains a daily challenge.
With the shift toward electric vehicles, the need for low-noise tyres has never been more urgent. Quieter motors make tyre noise more noticeable, turning every hum, buzz, or vibration into a perceptible distraction. Continental addresses this with technologies designed to tackle noise both outside and inside the vehicle.
The Silent Pattern tread design reduces rolling noise by breaking the rhythmic contact of tread blocks with the road. On conventional tyres, evenly spaced blocks produce a humming sound as they strike the pavement. Continental’s irregular tread arrangement disrupts this pattern, effectively cancelling out unwanted noise. Optimised for speeds around 50 km/h, where tyre noise is most audible, the Silent Pattern helps create calmer streets, benefiting drivers, pedestrians, and local residents alike.
Inside the vehicle, ContiSilent technology absorbs noise caused by vibrations within the tyre. A special ultra-light polyurethane foam applied during production reduces cabin noise by up to nine decibels, effectively halving the perceived volume. This innovation enhances driving comfort without affecting performance, fuel efficiency, load capacity, or top speed. ContiSilent is available on a range of summer tyres, including the ultra-high-performance SportContact 7, and provides a significant comfort upgrade for everyday driving.
Continental also offers low-noise options such as the EcoContact 6 Q, making it easy for consumers to select tyres that are quieter and kinder to the environment. By focusing on noise reduction through innovative design and materials, Continental is improving urban life and elevating the driving experience, all while maintaining the safety and performance standards expected from a leading tyre manufacturer.
