Chevrolet Warriors help GMSA pack 15 000 meals for Stop Hunger Now
Port Elizabeth – General Motors South Africa (GMSA) employees put their car-building skills to use on a food-packing production line as they volunteered their time to help the less fortunate on Mandela Day.
Packing 15 000 meals in total for the humanitarian relief organisation, Stop Hunger Now, 120 employee volunteers were joined by members of the Chevrolet Warriors and Algoa FM presenter Tové Kane in a challenge to pack the most meal boxes in 67 minutes. Taking lessons from the vehicle manufacturing production line into the challenge, teams were measured on quality, speed, neatness, safety and efficiency.
The Mechanical Masters, representing the manufacturing, engineering and quality departments, took the honours in packing their 24 boxes in under 67 minutes.
In total 15 000 meals, comprising dehydrated non-perishable nutritional food, were packed. GMSA employees nominated a number of charities in the Bay as beneficiaries of the meals.
Stop Hunger Now is an international organisation that coordinates distribution of food and other life-saving aid to the needy. Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa is a volunteer-based nutrition organisation that packs meals and focuses specifically on pre-school children.
