The Chery Tiggo 9 has demonstrated exceptional safety performance in a recent Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) crash test, further solidifying its position as a premium SUV engineered with occupant protection in mind. This outstanding result underscores Chery’s commitment to safety innovation and structural integrity, ensuring peace of mind for drivers and passengers alike.
A Rigorous Test, An Exceptional Performance
Among the various evaluations conducted by Euro NCAP, the side mobile barrier test stands out as one of the most demanding. In this scenario, a deformable barrier, mounted on a trolley, is driven into the side of the vehicle at a speed of 60 km/h. This test simulates a high-impact collision scenario, challenging a vehicle’s structural resilience and occupant protection capabilities.
The Tiggo 9 excelled in this evaluation, demonstrating impressive passenger safety. A side-impact dummy representing an average adult male was placed in the driver’s seat, while additional child dummies were secured in child restraint systems in the rear seats. The SUV’s robust structure, including its A-, B-, and C-pillars, remained intact, preserving crucial survival space for all occupants. Notably, the doors on the unimpacted side could be opened without difficulty, and seatbelts could be unfastened smoothly, allowing for an efficient and safe exit post-collision.
Designed for Maximum Protection
A key highlight of the Tiggo 9’s performance was its well-calibrated airbag deployment. All 10 airbags—including side airbags—activated as designed, significantly reducing the risk of severe injuries to vital areas such as the head, ribs, and lungs. Furthermore, the integrity of the fuel system and battery pack remained uncompromised, mitigating secondary risks such as leaks or fires that can occur in real-world accidents.
Chery’s dedication to safety extends beyond airbags and impact resistance. The Tiggo 9’s body structure is engineered using 85% high-strength steel, with 21% of this composition made up of hot-formed steel. This combination ensures that collision energy is effectively absorbed and redirected away from the passenger cell, preventing deformation and further enhancing occupant protection.

Intelligent Safety: E-CALL Technology
Beyond its robust structural design, the Tiggo 9 is also equipped with E-CALL, a vital life-saving feature. This intelligent system detects when the vehicle has been involved in a severe collision and automatically transmits the vehicle’s location and other crucial details to emergency services via a built-in communication module. This function is particularly beneficial in situations where occupants may be unable to call for assistance themselves, enhancing the SUV’s real-world safety credentials.
Commitment to Excellence
“From the Tiggo 4 Pro to our flagship Tiggo 9, every Chery is crafted with a focus on safety, reflecting our commitment to protecting what matters most,” said Verene Petersen, National Marketing Manager for Chery South Africa. “The Tiggo 9’s performance in the Euro NCAP test underscores Chery’s dedication to delivering security and confidence for every driver and their loved ones.”
Euro NCAP: The Benchmark for Automotive Safety
Established in 1997, Euro NCAP is one of the world’s most respected automotive safety assessment organisations. Backed by multiple European government bodies and safety agencies, the programme subjects vehicles to rigorous crash tests that set global benchmarks for automotive safety. The results serve as a critical reference for consumers, guiding informed car-buying decisions while encouraging manufacturers to continuously enhance safety standards.
With its stellar performance in the Euro NCAP safety tests, the Chery Tiggo 9 affirms its reputation as a premium SUV that prioritises safety, engineering excellence, and peace of mind. As automotive safety standards evolve, Chery remains steadfast in its mission to deliver vehicles that blend cutting-edge technology with superior occupant protection.
