Chery South Africa has taken a significant step in empowering the nation’s youth by awarding a R250,000 tertiary scholarship and a 12-month internship to promising scholar, Paul Melinda. This initiative stems from the inaugural Chery Scholarship Challenge, launched earlier this year with the aim of nurturing brilliant young minds and fostering creativity within the automotive industry.
The challenge called upon South African youth to craft an engaging advertising campaign for the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, the brand’s popular compact SUV known for its blend of style, technology, and affordability. The response was overwhelming, with over 880 registrations and more than 50 innovative entries pouring in from across the country.
From these submissions, ten candidates were shortlisted based on the originality and impact of their ideas. Four finalists were then invited to present their campaigns directly to Chery’s executive team, providing them with a platform to showcase their talents and receive valuable feedback from industry professionals.
A Standout Campaign
Paul Melinda, a Bachelor of Information Technology in Business Systems student at IIE Rosebank College, emerged as the standout contender. His campaign was praised for its compelling storytelling and exceptional visual artistry, elements that resonated with Chery’s brand ethos.
“Paul’s campaign immediately stood out from the rest. It was a testament to his storytelling ability and skill in visual arts,” remarked Verene Petersen, National Marketing Manager for Chery South Africa. “His innovative approach captured the essence of the Tiggo 4 Pro and demonstrated a deep understanding of our target audience.”

Empowering the Future
As the recipient of the Chery Scholarship Challenge, Melinda will receive financial support to further his tertiary education and an internship opportunity that promises real-world experience within a global automotive company.
“I’m honoured to have won,” Melinda expressed with enthusiasm. “The access and support from a global business like Chery will give my career and start in life a big boost. I’m excited to contribute to the company and learn from industry leaders.”
A Commitment to Community
The Chery Scholarship Challenge, announced on Youth Day, reflects Chery South Africa’s dedication to investing in the country’s future leaders. The initiative is set to become an annual program, continually providing opportunities for young talents to shine.
“This scholarship demonstrates Chery’s commitment to the South African community. Supporting and giving opportunities to the youth is close to our hearts,” concluded Petersen. “We believe in empowering the next generation to drive innovation and success within the automotive industry.”
