Chery is charging into the future with bold ambition and ground-breaking technology. In 2025, the Chinese automotive powerhouse will introduce an impressive 19 new hybrid models, spanning HEV (hybrid electric vehicle), PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle), and REEV (range-extender electric vehicle) categories. Leading this charge is the debut of Chery’s Super Hybrid (CSH) brand, a major milestone in the automaker’s global electrification strategy, set to be unveiled at Auto Shanghai 2024.
A New Generation of Intelligent Hybrids
The public debut of the Tiggo 7 CSH, Tiggo 8 CSH, and Tiggo 9 CSH will signal the arrival of a new generation of electrified performance and efficiency. These models are underpinned by next-generation hybrid powertrains that set new benchmarks in the industry.
At the heart of CSH is a hybrid engine boasting an industry-leading thermal efficiency of 46.5%, paired with an advanced transmission achieving 93% energy efficiency. This synergy allows for exceptional fuel economy—as low as 2–3L/100 km—without compromising power or responsiveness.
Chery’s engineering marvel includes a dedicated 2.0 TGDI hybrid engine, coupled with DHT230 and DHT280 transmissions, delivering a system output of up to 280 kW and hybrid motor speeds of up to 24,000 rpm. Whether navigating city streets or tackling untamed landscapes, CSH vehicles promise refined performance with muscular versatility.
Built for Every Terrain
Versatility is at the core of CSH’s design philosophy. Chery’s modular hybrid platforms—from the Super Hybrid Off-road Platform to the Super Golden Extended-Range Platform, High-performance Electric Platform, and the flagship Super Hybrid Platform—offer tailored solutions for diverse mobility needs.
This multi-platform approach gives Chery the flexibility to engineer vehicles that are as adept in rugged environments as they are in urban ecosystems. Drivers can expect seamless integration of power, efficiency, and endurance—making CSH vehicles ideal companions on both highways and hinterlands.
A South African Perspective
According to Jay Jay Botes, General Manager of Chery South Africa, the brand’s Super Hybrid rollout holds significant promise for emerging markets:
“Advancing hybrid technology means harnessing innovation and new energy to drive sustainable growth and support a greener future. We believe Super Hybrid technology will become a key growth driver in markets like South Africa, especially as we expand our local lineup with electrified models later this year.”
With fuel prices and environmental concerns on the rise, the availability of advanced hybrid options could be a game-changer in South Africa’s evolving mobility landscape.

From R&D Pioneer to Global Leader
Chery’s journey to hybrid dominance has been over two decades in the making. Since 2001, when hybrid technology was still nascent, the company has pursued a strategy rooted in innovation and resilience. This dedication culminated in the recent unveiling of its hybrid tech ecosystem at the Chery Hybrid Night & Open Source Initiative Launch in Wuhu, China.
This event not only showcased CSH’s capabilities but also reaffirmed Chery’s role as a technology leader rather than a follower. Under the leadership of Chairman Yin Tongyue, Chery’s hybrid strategy is grounded in what he terms the “four essentials”:
- Eco-friendly development
- Affordability
- Safety
- Extended driving range
These pillars serve as guiding principles in Chery’s mission to deliver accessible, sustainable mobility on a global scale.
A Real-World Test of Endurance
Chery is putting its technology where its ambition is. In an upcoming long-distance road test, the Tiggo 9 CSH will cover over 1,600 km across China in just four days—from the breathtaking Three Gorges to Wuhan, through the historic town of Wuzhen, and concluding in Shanghai. This rigorous journey will provide a real-world demonstration of the reliability, efficiency, and extended range that CSH vehicles offer.
Looking Ahead
With the launch of CSH and a full lineup of innovative hybrid vehicles, Chery is positioning itself at the forefront of the global mobility revolution. Its hybrid triad—comprising full in-house control of key technologies, a commitment to industry safety standards, and an open-source collaboration model—cements its role as a disruptor and innovator in the rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
As the world races toward a cleaner, more connected future, Chery’s Super Hybrid initiative is not just a technological leap—it’s a declaration of intent. And for markets like South Africa, it’s a sign of electrified possibilities just over the horizon.
