The mid-size SUV segment in South Africa has grown crowded, but not necessarily more exciting. Familiar shapes, predictable feature sets and incremental updates have come to define a category that once thrived on innovation. Into this landscape steps the Changan UNI-S, a vehicle that doesn’t politely join the conversation, but rather changes its tone entirely.

Introduced as an all-new nameplate, the UNI-S signals a decisive move by Changan to challenge long-standing assumptions about what a mid-size SUV should offer. It is aimed squarely at drivers who demand more than just practicality, blending expressive design with advanced engineering and a strong value proposition that feels anything but conventional.

Visually, the UNI-S leans into a progressive design philosophy that prioritises presence as much as purpose. Sculpted surfaces and assertive lines give it a confident stance on the road, while premium details such as 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps with daytime running lights and an electric panoramic sunroof elevate its appeal. Functional touches, including rain-sensing wipers, reverse-tilt electric folding mirrors and an electric tailgate, ensure that the striking design remains grounded in everyday usability.

Beneath its bold exterior, the UNI-S is engineered to deliver performance that matches its visual intent. Power comes from Changan’s “Blue Whale” 1.5-litre turbocharged engine, producing 138kW and 300Nm of torque. Paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, the drivetrain strikes a balance between responsiveness and efficiency, making it equally suited to urban commutes and open-road cruising.

The driving experience is further enhanced by a multi-link independent rear suspension, which provides a level of ride comfort and stability not always expected in this segment. Combined with systems such as electronic stability control, traction control and hill assist, the UNI-S is designed to handle the varied and often demanding conditions of South African roads with composure.

Inside, the UNI-S distinguishes itself through a technology offering that feels more aligned with premium segments. A 12.8-inch central display integrates with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster to create a cohesive, driver-focused environment. Connectivity is seamless, with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, voice control functionality and a Bluetooth mobile phone key system all included as standard.

More notably, the UNI-S brings an extensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems into a category where such features are often optional or unavailable. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist and blind spot detection collectively elevate both safety and convenience, reinforcing the vehicle’s forward-thinking positioning.

Despite its technological depth, the UNI-S remains firmly rooted in real-world usability. The cabin is designed to accommodate the practical needs of daily life, offering features such as heated and ventilated seats, electric seat adjustment and rear air vents. The result is an interior that balances comfort with intuitive functionality, avoiding unnecessary complexity while still delivering a premium experience.

According to Marinus Venter, General Manager of Jameel Motors South Africa, the UNI-S represents a pivotal moment for the brand’s local ambitions. He describes the model as a clear statement of intent, highlighting Changan’s ability to deliver on engineering, design and technology in a way that resonates with South African drivers. More than simply entering a competitive segment, the UNI-S is positioned as a vehicle that raises expectations across the board.

That sense of confidence extends beyond the product itself. The UNI-S is supported by Changan Journey, a comprehensive after-sales programme designed to provide long-term peace of mind. Buyers benefit from a 5-year or 150,000km warranty and a 5-year or 90,000km service plan, alongside 24-hour roadside assistance and access to a national dealership network staffed by factory-trained technicians using genuine parts.

The range comprises three models, starting with the UNI-S CS at R389,900, followed by the UNI-S CL at R429,900 and the flagship UNI-S CE at R469,000. Customers can choose from a palette that includes Black, Putty Grey, Shadow Grey, Fluorite Grey and Moon White, allowing for a degree of personalisation to match the vehicle’s distinctive character.

With the UNI-S, Changan is not merely adding another option to the mid-size SUV market. It is redefining the parameters of the segment, delivering a product that blends design, performance, technology and ownership value in a way that feels genuinely progressive. For drivers seeking something beyond the expected, the UNI-S arrives not as a follower, but as a catalyst for change.
