The charge has changed in South Africa’s automotive landscape, and it is arriving with a distinctly practical pulse. Changan South Africa has stepped into the next chapter of electric mobility with a new-generation EV lineup designed not for distant theory, but for the lived reality of long roads, varied terrain, and the everyday demands of local drivers.
At the centre of this rollout is a clear philosophy, electric innovation must serve real-world usability. Instead of treating electrification as a singular idea, Changan introduces a layered approach that balances aspiration with accessibility, offering solutions that speak to both utility-focused drivers and those seeking premium refinement.
The Hunter K50 REEV stands as the most immediate expression of this intent. It is positioned as the world’s first range-extended electric bakkie available locally, merging the responsiveness of an electric drivetrain with the reassurance of a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol generator. This combination creates a driving experience that feels electric in its immediacy, yet removes the traditional barriers of range anxiety that can complicate long-distance travel. With up to 200kW of power and 470Nm of torque, it delivers the strength expected of a modern bakkie, while offering up to 145km of pure electric driving and as much as 1000km of combined range when the range extender is engaged. Its practical credentials, including a 1,010kg payload capacity and robust off-road capability, place it firmly within South Africa’s work and adventure culture.
Where the Hunter K50 REEV is built for endurance and utility, the Deepal S07 shifts the conversation toward refinement and intelligent luxury. Its design language is sculptural and modern, defined by clean surfaces, frameless doors, and a calm, composed stance that signals a new direction for electric premium mobility. Inside, the cabin introduces a more experiential interpretation of technology and comfort, blending advanced digital interfaces with a spacious, yacht-inspired layout that prioritises openness and sophistication.
Performance and technology operate in harmony within the S07, offering 160kW of rear-wheel-driven power alongside a 500km electric range. Rapid charging capability further enhances its usability, allowing significant energy recovery in a short window of time. The interior technology suite reinforces its premium positioning, with a large infotainment display, augmented reality head-up projection, immersive audio, and a comprehensive camera system designed to simplify complex driving environments.
Expanding this philosophy into a more compact form, the incoming Deepal S05 REEV introduces a versatile option for urban and suburban drivers who still require extended capability. Like its larger counterpart in the range-extended segment, it blends electric propulsion with a petrol-driven generator to extend overall driving distance to around 1000km. Its battery system supports meaningful electric-only travel for daily use, while fast charging ensures efficiency when time is limited.
The S05 carries the same design DNA and technological focus as the S07, integrating advanced driver assistance systems, high-resolution displays, and an immersive digital cockpit. It is positioned as a more agile interpretation of the brand’s premium EV vision, tailored for environments where space, efficiency, and flexibility are equally important.
Across the lineup, Changan’s message is consistent. Electrification is not presented as novelty, but as a practical evolution of mobility suited to South African conditions. It is an approach that recognises distance, infrastructure variability, and consumer expectations, while still advancing the experience of driving toward a more intelligent and efficient future.
As articulated by Marinus Venter, General Manager of Changan South Africa, the goal is to deliver advanced mobility that remains grounded in everyday relevance, combining innovation with usability in a way that feels both natural and necessary. In doing so, Changan positions its next-generation EV strategy not as a distant ambition, but as a timely response to a market ready for change.
