In a poignant celebration of Transport Month 2024, Daimler Truck Southern Africa (DTSA) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting truck drivers, the unsung heroes of the logistics industry. Partnering with select dealerships along major South African routes, DTSA showcased its appreciation through the distribution of thoughtful gift hampers and essential health services, underscoring the vital role truck drivers play in keeping the nation’s economy moving.
A Collaborative Effort
Throughout October, DTSA and its long-time partner, Trucking Wellness, reached out to key regions including Bloemfontein, Harrismith, Middleburg, and East London. These initiatives, executed in collaboration with local dealerships such as Garden City Commercials and Ronnies Commercial Vehicles, provided not only tokens of appreciation but also essential health and wellness checks for drivers.
“Truck drivers are the backbone of our logistics network, playing a crucial role in transporting goods and driving economic growth across the continent,” remarked Maretha Gerber, President and Group CEO at DTSA. “During Transport Month, it is especially fitting to recognize and appreciate these dedicated professionals. They endure long hours on the road, often under challenging conditions, and their commitment ensures that our shops remain stocked and our economy thrives.”
Health and Wellness Focus
This year’s initiative emphasized the critical need for health education among truck drivers, particularly concerning high blood pressure—a persistent health risk identified during previous outreach efforts. The Trucking Wellness Project aims to provide drivers with vital information and lifestyle guidance to help them manage their health while spending long hours on the road.
Judith Bester, Project Leader for Trucking Wellness, expressed gratitude for the collaboration with DTSA, stating, “This was a wonderful experience, enabling us to interact and engage in open conversations with the drivers about the health issues they face daily. Not only does this allow us to provide necessary health information, but it also offers insights into how we can further adapt our services to ensure healthier drivers and safer roads.”

The Importance of Transport Month
Transport Month was established in 2005 during the Transport Lekgotla and is celebrated annually in October. The initiative aims to raise awareness of the crucial role transport plays in the economy, encouraging civil society and businesses to promote a safe, affordable, accessible, and reliable transport system.
The Trucking Wellness Project
As part of a broader commitment to improving the health and well-being of those in the road freight and logistics sector, Trucking Wellness operates a program supported by DTSA. With 20 fixed clinics and mobile clinics across South Africa, the initiative has made significant strides in health education, diagnosis, and early treatment of diseases. In 2023 alone, it provided health information to 31,436 individuals and facilitated over 28,000 consultations.
DTSA’s dedicated Trucking Wellness Project also focuses specifically on truck and bus driver health, exemplified by the DTSA Fleet Owner Workplace Wellness Programme. This initiative aims to minimize the impact of disease in the workplace, benefitting not only the drivers and fleet operators but also enhancing overall road safety.
DTSA’s commitment during Transport Month 2024 serves as a powerful reminder of the dedication and sacrifices made by truck drivers across South Africa. By combining efforts to promote health and safety with expressions of gratitude, DTSA is not only supporting the logistics network but also fostering a culture of care and appreciation within the industry. As we reflect on the significance of Transport Month, let us all recognize and value the vital work done by truck drivers, ensuring that they receive the acknowledgment they truly deserve.
