ISUZU Motors South Africa (ISUZU) is proudly celebrating a remarkable milestone: 60 years of truck production and 45 years of reliable bakkie manufacturing in the country. As one of South Africa’s foremost Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM), ISUZU boasts a rich heritage and has made significant contributions not only to the local automotive industry but also to the broader African market.

This journey is a testament to the company’s resilience, honed through various transitions, including its evolution from General Motors and Delta to becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of ISUZU Motors Limited on January 1, 2018. Following General Motors’ exit from the South African market in 2017, ISUZU Motors Limited made a strategic decision to take over the assembly and related facilities. This move ensured the continuity of production for vehicles that have served the African continent with distinction, showcasing ISUZU’s long-term commitment to the South African economy and its workforce.

Leadership in Challenging Times

Under the stewardship of President Billy Tom, ISUZU has successfully navigated turbulent waters, including the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Tom emphasized, “ISUZU’s ability to stay resilient during industry transitions and the global crisis has been key to our success. We remain dedicated to the people who build our vehicles and the markets we serve across the African continent.” His leadership has been pivotal in steering ISUZU toward innovation, expansion, and increased production capabilities across African markets.

Commitment to Transformation and Inclusivity

A cornerstone of ISUZU’s philosophy is its commitment to transformation and inclusivity. The company proudly holds a Level 1 B-BBEE status for five consecutive years, setting a benchmark for diversity within the automotive sector. “Our workforce reflects the makeup of South Africa. We are proud of our efforts in driving change both within ISUZU and in the broader community,” Tom noted, highlighting the company’s role in promoting social equity.

ISUZU’s achievements are noteworthy. It has maintained its position as the leading truck brand in the medium and heavy commercial vehicle (MCV and HCV) cab-on-chassis segments for an impressive 11 years. Additionally, it has garnered recognition as Manufacturer of the Year by the South African Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (SAVRALA) for four consecutive years, and was named an internationally recognized Top Employer for two years running. The company was also awarded the title of Eastern Cape’s Best Exporter into the African continent in 2023.

Strategic Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, ISUZU is strategically positioning itself to capitalize on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement, aiming to expand its footprint across the continent. Tom envisions transforming ISUZU into a leader in sustainable business practices, combining reliability and creativity to foster mutual growth in Africa.

The journey of ISUZU Motors South Africa is one of resilience, growth, and unwavering dedication to its people and communities. As the company continues to deliver high-quality vehicles, it remains a proud contributor to South Africa’s automotive sector, ensuring meaningful impact in the communities it serves.

In this moment of celebration, ISUZU Motors South Africa not only reflects on its storied past but also looks forward to a future filled with promise and potential, underpinned by its core values of reliability, innovation, and community engagement.
