Salisbury, 22nd August 2024 — The year 2024 marks an extraordinary milestone in automotive history: the 75th anniversary of the Austin J40 pedal car, a beloved icon that has delighted generations of children and enthusiasts alike since its launch in 1949. To honor this occasion, Austin Pedal Cars has curated a special display within the Rotunda at the prestigious Royal Automobile Club on Pall Mall, London. This exhibition, running from 20th August to 3rd September, offers Royal Automobile Club members and invited guests a rare opportunity to journey through 75 years of pedal car history, featuring eight unique Austin pedal cars that embody the brand’s rich heritage and enduring charm.

A Legacy in Motion: The Austin J40 Pedal Car
The Austin J40 pedal car, which first rolled off the production line in 1949, was more than just a toy. It was a symbol of post-war British ingenuity, providing employment for disabled coal miners in South Wales and bringing joy to children worldwide. Over 32,000 of these miniature cars were produced at the Austin Junior Car Factory in Bargoed, each crafted with the same attention to detail as the full-sized Austin vehicles. From working headlights to leather seats, the J40 was a marvel of engineering in a child-sized package.

In 2023, Austin Pedal Cars breathed new life into this classic with the launch of the J40 Continuation, a modern take on the original, featuring updated technology while preserving its iconic design.

The Royal Automobile Club Display: A Timeline of Pedal Car Excellence
The display at the Royal Automobile Club is a meticulously curated showcase of eight distinct Austin pedal cars, each representing a different chapter in the brand’s history. The exhibition begins with the 1949 Austin Pathfinder, the very first car prepared for the opening of the Bargoed factory. This car, lovingly restored in 1975, is a testament to the enduring quality and appeal of Austin’s creations.

Among the highlights is the Austin Pedal Cars Police Car, a one-of-a-kind J40 with working lights, siren, and Police livery, famously leading the Settrington Cup race at the Goodwood Revival. Another standout is the 2022 prototype chassis for the Austin J40 Continuation, showcasing the intricate engineering and lightweight construction that define the latest iteration of this classic.

Visitors can also marvel at the 1970 Settrington Cup racer, a veteran of the annual Goodwood Revival pedal car race, proudly displaying its battle scars and entrant stickers. The 2024 J40 Continuation Holland & Sherry collaboration, featuring a Savile Row tailored interior, is a fitting culmination of the display, merging timeless design with contemporary luxury.

Celebrating 75 Years Of The Austin J40 Pedal Car At The Royal Automobile Club

A Celebration of British Motoring Heritage
The Royal Automobile Club, with its distinguished history dating back to 1897, is the perfect venue for this celebration. The Club has been at the forefront of promoting the motor car and its place in society since its inception, hosting prestigious motoring events and advocating for the rights of motorists. The display of Austin pedal cars is a fitting tribute to this legacy, honoring a British motor manufacturing story that has often been overlooked.

Mark Burnett, Managing Director of Austin Pedal Cars, expressed his pride in the display, stating, “What a way to celebrate 75 years of these wonderful pedal cars! The beautiful surroundings of the Rotunda, within the Royal Automobile Club in London, is the perfect place to honour a British motor manufacturing legacy that is often forgotten. Not only are these cars every inch a proper Austin, but they also provided employment to hundreds of people and brought joy to children around the world.”

The Enduring Appeal of the Austin J40
The Austin J40 has cemented its place in automotive history, not only as a cherished children’s toy but as a symbol of British craftsmanship and social responsibility. Its continued popularity, from its original production to the recent launch of the J40 Continuation, speaks to its timeless design and the nostalgic connection it holds for many.

This display at the Royal Automobile Club is a must-see for motoring enthusiasts, offering a unique glimpse into the evolution of the Austin J40 and the enduring legacy of a British icon.
