In a stunning display of growth and market penetration, BYD has achieved a new sales milestone in the UK, with a record 9,271 passenger cars sold in the first quarter of 2025. This impressive figure surpasses the total sales for the entire year of 2024 and underscores BYD’s rapid rise as the UK’s fastest-growing car brand.
A Surge in Market Share
This remarkable achievement has propelled BYD’s UK market share to an impressive 1.6%, a sharp increase from just 0.45% in the first quarter of 2024. In March alone, the company captured 1.8% of the UK car market, marking a significant two-year milestone since the brand first introduced its passenger cars in the UK in March 2023.
The sales surge is not just a testament to the appeal of BYD’s cutting-edge electric vehicles but also highlights the brand’s strategic approach to offering high-tech, high-value cars tailored to the UK market’s growing demand for sustainable mobility.
Top Performers: BYD SEAL and SEAL U DM-i
The standout performers in BYD’s Q1 2025 sales were the SEAL U DM-i and the SEAL, both of which have solidified their positions as key players in the UK’s electrified vehicle market. The BYD SEAL U DM-i was the best-selling plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in March 2025, with 3,975 units sold, while the SEAL achieved impressive sales of 2,521 units, securing its place as the seventh most popular pure electric vehicle in the same month.
These impressive figures reflect BYD’s ability to cater to a diverse range of consumer preferences, with the SEAL U DM-i appealing to those seeking the efficiency of a hybrid powertrain, while the fully electric SEAL offers a sleek, high-performance alternative for environmentally-conscious buyers.

A New Chapter with the SEALION 7
Joining the lineup in March 2025, the all-new BYD SEALION 7 has already sparked interest with its sporty design, advanced technology, and impressive range. Built on BYD’s e-platform 3.0 and featuring the brand’s innovative Blade Battery, the SEALION 7 boasts an all-electric range of up to 312 miles. This model is designed to meet the growing demand for stylish, practical, and high-performance electric SUVs, further enhancing BYD’s footprint in the UK market.
Steve Beattie, Sales and Marketing Director at BYD UK, expressed his pride in the company’s performance: “I am incredibly proud of our latest achievement in the UK. Thanks to the tireless work of our team and retailer partners, we have smashed yet another sales record. At BYD, our mission is to bring high-tech and high-value cars to our customers, and it’s great to see this resonating with UK buyers. With the addition of the SEALION 7, we are confident that more people will continue to choose BYD.”
A Longstanding Presence in the UK
While BYD’s passenger car division is a relatively new entrant in the UK, the brand has a long and successful history in the country, particularly through its commercial vehicle division. Since 2014, BYD has been a leader in electric buses, with over 2,500 of its fully-electric buses now operating in major cities across the UK. Additionally, since 2016, the company has provided 1.8GWh of battery energy storage to the UK’s national grid, contributing to the country’s sustainability goals and strengthening BYD’s reputation as a pioneer in clean energy solutions.
Looking Ahead
As BYD continues to expand its presence in the UK, the success of the SEAL U DM-i, SEAL, and the new SEALION 7 sets the stage for even greater achievements in the years to come. With a clear focus on delivering high-tech, high-value, and environmentally conscious vehicles, BYD is well-positioned to maintain its rapid growth and continue reshaping the UK’s automotive landscape. The company’s record-breaking sales performance in Q1 2025 is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting and transformative journey for the brand in the UK market.
