Budapest, Hungary – May 2025
In a landmark move reinforcing its strategic commitment to Europe, BYD – the world’s leading manufacturer of new-energy vehicles – has officially announced the establishment of its European business headquarters in Budapest, Hungary. This pivotal decision is complemented by the creation of a new European Research and Development Centre, aimed at accelerating advances in intelligence and electrification technologies.
Located in the 11th district of the Hungarian capital, the new headquarters marks BYD’s fifth site in Hungary, following existing operations in Komárom, Fót, Páty, and the upcoming passenger vehicle production plant in Szeged. Beyond bricks and mortar, the announcement brings with it the promise of thousands of high-value jobs and meaningful collaborations with at least three Hungarian universities. These partnerships will provide both training and education opportunities, positioning Hungary as a rising centre of technological excellence in the new-energy vehicle sector.
Laying the Groundwork for a Smarter, Cleaner Future
The R&D centre’s initial focus will be on two pioneering projects. The first will explore the next generation of intelligent mobility, integrating cutting-edge AI and smart systems into BYD’s European vehicle lineup. The second project will accelerate the development of advanced electrification technologies, laying the groundwork for more efficient, sustainable transportation solutions.
In a clear nod to its long-term vision and policy of localisation, BYD has committed to registering patents developed at the Hungarian centre. The company also plans to actively collaborate with local start-ups and suppliers, further embedding itself within the domestic innovation ecosystem. Notably, more than 90 per cent of employees at the R&D centre are expected to hold higher education qualifications – a testament to BYD’s investment in skilled, knowledge-based growth.

Strategic Vision from the Top
Wang Chuanfu, Chairman and President of BYD, emphasised the significance of the new headquarters within the company’s broader European strategy:
“Establishing BYD’s European headquarters in Hungary is a natural progression. As the core hub for BYD’s European operations, the headquarters will focus on three key functions: sales and after-sales services, vehicle certification and testing, and localised vehicle design and feature development. Through these synergies, we aim to deepen integration with local markets, enhance our localisation capabilities and brand influence, and ensure sustainable growth in Europe.”
The move aligns closely with Hungary’s national objectives for attracting high-value foreign investment. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán underscored the importance of the decision:
“Our goal is for foreign investors to bring development capacities to Hungary – not only manufacturing, but also development. Factories come first, then development centres, and finally research hubs. Today’s announcement is of great importance because BYD is now opening a new era by bringing its development centre to Hungary.”
Building a European Powerhouse
With this announcement, BYD strengthens its footprint in Europe while signalling confidence in Hungary as a strategic gateway for growth, innovation, and regional integration. The combined investment in corporate infrastructure and R&D is expected to have a ripple effect throughout the Hungarian economy – boosting job creation, enriching the local supplier network, and placing the country firmly on the map as a new-energy technology leader.
In an era of intensifying global competition in electric mobility, BYD’s expansion into Hungary represents more than just a physical move – it’s a bold step towards a smarter, greener, and more collaborative automotive future for Europe.
