Following the hugely successful introduction of its media training programme last year, The Guild of Motoring Writers is once again offering members and non-members top-flight tutorials – at bargain fees you’ll find nowhere else!

Prices for each of the three full-day courses are set at £60 for members – demonstrating the great value of Guild membership – and £160 for non-members (both prices include VAT). This makes workshops absolute top value compared with the £350-plus charged elsewhere for similar training. Arranged with the generous support of Skoda, the tutorials will once again be run by the Media and Communication department at Coventry University, home of the Guild-supported Masters in Automotive Journalism.

Dates and details are: Basic InDesign – Thursday 23 August; Basic Picture Editing in Photoshop – Tuesday 28 August; and InDesign, Problems, Fixes and Foolproof Layouts – Monday 3 September. The courses have been organised in this order so that basic skills are taught first, benefiting all those who wish to attend two or all three. The cost of each tutorial – places are limited to 17 per course – includes refreshments on arrival and lunch in the University’s new Hub student centre.

Jim Holder, Editor of Autocar, explained why media training is so important: “The standard of new recruits at Autocar has never been higher – and that’s why it’s so important that wannabe motoring journalists go the extra mile, taking opportunities to immerse themselves in the industry and the skills that they will need to succeed in it. These Guild-run courses offer the best of both worlds – training in relevant skills and the opportunity to meet and work with people with similar goals.”

Feedback from students on the 2011 course included: “A splendid day that taught me heaps and will save hours of frustration,” said one participant. Another enthused: “At last – an InDesign workshop for non-designers. What a completely stunning idea. Simple and easy to understand – aimed at exactly the right level. Please, please hold some more so I can tell my friends about them.”

To find out more details about the workshops and book your place at any or all of them, please see the Guild’s website at gomw.co.uk. There, you will be able to sign up for tuition, register your details and pay a £30 non-refundable deposit via Paypal. You will be contacted nearer the time with additional information. If you have any specific enquires about the training, or would like recommendations for local overnight accommodation, please email tutor Andrew Noakes – a working motoring writer and Guild committee member – on [email protected].
