Electrifying the Great Outdoors: BMW’s Partnership with UK National Parks Enhances EV Travel
As British staycations become increasingly popular, travelers are turning to electric vehicles (EVs) as a greener alternative for exploring the UK’s natural beauty. Recent data from Zapmap and BMW UK reveals a significant expansion in EV charging infrastructure, particularly along routes leading to beloved holiday destinations. With hundreds of new charging points now available, it’s easier than ever to embark on a guilt-free journey to the UK’s picturesque National Parks.

A Surge in EV Charging Points
The UK’s EV charging network has experienced remarkable growth, with the number of charging points increasing by 45% this year alone. According to Zapmap, over 16,600 new charge points were added last year, bringing the total to more than 64,000 across over 33,000 locations. This expansion reflects a growing commitment to supporting the shift towards electric mobility, making EVs an increasingly viable option for long-distance travel.

BMW’s Green Initiative: The Recharge in Nature Partnership
In a bid to further enhance the EV travel experience, BMW has partnered with UK National Parks to install new charging stations in all 15 of the country’s National Parks. This initiative, known as The Recharge in Nature partnership, aims to reduce driving emissions and noise pollution in these serene environments. To date, 78 new charge points have been installed across seven National Parks, with the goal of reaching all 15 by the end of the project.

Graham Biggs, Corporate Communications Director at BMW UK, emphasizes the importance of spreading EV charging infrastructure beyond urban areas. “While the ever-growing number of EV charge points in the UK is encouraging, it’s vital that the momentum is accelerated and that rural areas are not left behind in the EV transition,” he explains. The initiative seeks to ensure that natural beauty spots remain accessible while minimizing their environmental impact.

The Benefits of EVs for Rural Tourism
The advantages of EVs extend beyond just reducing emissions. With zero tailpipe emissions and lower noise levels, electric vehicles contribute to a more peaceful and eco-friendly experience in the countryside. This is particularly relevant for National Parks, which attract millions of visitors each summer who seek tranquility and natural beauty.

apmap data highlights the enhanced accessibility of National Parks for EV drivers. Popular routes to destinations like the Yorkshire Dales, Peak District, and Lake District are now well-equipped with enroute charging points. For example, there are 91 charging locations along the route from London to the Yorkshire Dales National Park, 144 between Glasgow and the Peak District, and over 180 between Bristol and the Lake District.

The End of Range Anxiety
The growing network of high-powered charging points and improvements in EV vehicle range are alleviating range anxiety, allowing drivers to plan longer journeys with confidence. Melanie Shufflebotham, Co-founder and COO of Zapmap, notes, “The days of EV range anxiety are quickly fading. With improvements in vehicle range, an increasing number of enroute chargers and more chargers available at leisure destinations, EV drivers can plan fun days out with confidence.”

BMW’s Commitment to Sustainability
BMW’s efforts to support EV travel align with its broader sustainability goals. The company has set ambitious CO2 reduction targets and is committed to halving the average CO2 emissions per vehicle by 2030 compared to 2019 levels. As a participant in the Business Ambition for 1.5°C and the Race to Zero, BMW is dedicated to achieving full climate neutrality across its value chain by 2050.

In conclusion, BMW’s collaboration with UK National Parks represents a significant step towards integrating sustainability with travel and tourism. As more EV charging points become available in rural and scenic areas, travelers can enjoy their trips with the assurance that their journey supports environmental conservation and reduces their carbon footprint.
