The BMW Group is set to revolutionize the electric vehicle (EV) landscape with the Neue Klasse, an ambitious initiative aimed at advancing fully electric driving. Central to this effort is the production of high-voltage batteries, a critical component for the success of EVs. To meet this demand, BMW is significantly expanding its global production network, establishing new assembly sites across three continents.

New Global Assembly Sites
BMW has announced the establishment of five new facilities for the production of sixth-generation high-voltage batteries. These sites are strategically located in Irlbach-Straßkirchen (Germany), Debrecen (Hungary), Shenyang (China), San Luis Potosí (Mexico), and Woodruff (USA). This expansion reflects BMW’s commitment to the “local for local” strategy, ensuring that battery production is closely integrated with vehicle manufacturing.

Technological Advancements
The Neue Klasse will debut BMW’s all-new cylindrical cells, which represent a significant technological leap. These cells offer improved energy density, faster charging times, and greater range, setting a new benchmark in the EV industry. By situating battery production near vehicle plants, BMW not only enhances production resilience but also reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation.

Debrecen: Pioneering the Neue Klasse
The first Neue Klasse vehicles will roll off the production line at BMW’s new plant in Debrecen, Hungary, starting in 2025. This facility will be a hub for both vehicle and battery manufacturing. With comprehensive employee training programs already in place, BMW is gearing up for a smooth transition to series production in the latter half of 2025.

Bmws Global Expansion For Sixth Generation High Voltage Battery Production

Expansion in China
From 2026, BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) in Shenyang, China, will commence the production of Neue Klasse vehicles. The local production of sixth-generation high-voltage batteries will support this effort. BMW has also established its largest R&D network outside Germany in China, with facilities in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang, and Nanjing, underscoring the strategic importance of the Chinese market.

San Luis Potosí: A New Frontier
BMW’s plant in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, is set to become a significant production site for the Neue Klasse by 2027. The new high-voltage battery assembly plant will span over 80,000 square meters. This expansion also includes substantial growth in the bodyshop, vehicle assembly, and logistics areas, making BMW the first premium OEM to produce fully electric cars and batteries in Mexico.

Advancements in South Carolina
In the United States, BMW Group Plant Woodruff in South Carolina will cover approximately 93 hectares and will be dedicated to assembling high-voltage batteries for EVs produced at nearby Plant Spartanburg. This facility will create over 300 new jobs and is slated for completion in 2026.

Lower Bavaria’s Contribution
Germany’s Irlbach-Straßkirchen in Lower Bavaria will also play a crucial role in BMW’s battery production network. This new facility will supply high-voltage batteries to German car plants. With strong local support, as evidenced by a 75% approval in a local referendum, BMW’s new plant underscores the company’s commitment to domestic manufacturing.

Concentrated Expertise in Munich
BMW’s Cell Manufacturing Competence Centre (CMCC) in Parsdorf and the Battery Cell Competence Centre (BCCC) in Munich are pivotal in developing and scaling up battery cell production. These centers enable close collaboration across various divisions, ensuring that BMW remains at the forefront of battery technology.

BMW’s strategic expansion of its high-voltage battery production network is a testament to its commitment to advancing electric mobility. By establishing state-of-the-art facilities across the globe and integrating battery and vehicle production, BMW is poised to lead the industry into a new era of sustainable and efficient electric driving.
