Munich/Las Vegas – At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 in Las Vegas, the BMW Group unveiled its vision for the driving and user experience of the future. Anchored by the groundbreaking BMW Panoramic iDrive and powered by the cutting-edge BMW Operating System X, this innovation sets a new benchmark in multimodal interaction, personalisation, and digital functionality. This holistic system will debut in the first series-produced Neue Klasse model and be standard across all new BMW models starting at the end of 2025.
Panoramic iDrive: A New Era of Driver-Centric Design
BMW’s Panoramic iDrive combines four key elements to deliver a unique display and operating concept, prioritising driver focus and ergonomic excellence:
- BMW Panoramic Vision: This innovative Head-Up Display spans from A-pillar to A-pillar, projecting critical information on a black-printed surface in the lower windscreen. Key driving details appear in the driver’s immediate line of sight, with personalisable content accessible via the central display. Passengers also benefit from a coordinated, 3D visual experience.
- BMW 3D Head-Up Display: Positioned above the Panoramic Vision, this optional feature integrates navigation and automated driving data directly into the driver’s field of vision, seamlessly coordinating with other display elements.
- Central Display: Equipped with matrix backlight technology, the central display offers an updated QuickSelect menu for intuitive touch operation. It allows widgets to be swiped into the Panoramic Vision, accommodating up to six configurable widgets for enhanced customisation.
- Multifunction Steering Wheel: Leveraging BMW’s “shy-tech” philosophy, this steering wheel highlights illuminated controls for active haptic feedback. Buttons are strategically arranged, ensuring effortless access to driver assistance and content functions without distraction.
These elements harmoniously embody BMW’s philosophy of “hands on the wheel, eyes on the road,” creating a user-friendly, immersive driving experience.
BMW Operating System X: Intelligent and Future-Proof
The new BMW Operating System X, based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), serves as the technological backbone of the Panoramic iDrive. It enhances vehicle intelligence, offering unmatched capabilities in personalisation and digital integration:
- Advanced Personalisation: Drivers can customise displays, driving modes, and ambient settings. User-uploaded images and bespoke interface designs further elevate the personal connection between driver and vehicle.
- Natural Language Processing: The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant integrates Large Language Models (LLM), enabling natural voice commands such as, “Take me to a charging station near a grocery store.” At CES 2025, a beta version of this system is showcased in a BMW X3.
- Proactive Learning: The system adapts to user behaviour, suggesting features like Sport Mode based on previous usage patterns while refraining from repeated prompts if ignored. This ensures a refined and responsive user experience.
- Third-Party App Integration: The platform supports over 60 apps, including productivity tools like Zoom, accessible via the BMW ConnectedDrive Store. This ecosystem will continue to expand, enhancing utility and entertainment options.

Enhanced Ergonomics and Seamless Interaction
The Panoramic iDrive’s design is rooted in BMW’s meticulous user research, involving data from over 22 million connected vehicles and input from 3,000 customers in usability labs. Key highlights include:
- Intuitive controls combining analogue and digital inputs.
- Haptic switches for essential functions like turn signals, wipers, and volume.
- Seamless interaction across the Panoramic Vision, Head-Up Display, and central display for an integrated user experience.
Redefining the Driving Experience
Beyond functionality, the Panoramic iDrive and Operating System X aim to create an emotionally engaging driving experience. The system’s design integrates adaptive soundscapes, such as the HypersonX sound experience, which adapts to driving modes and conditions. This immersive approach transforms every journey into a personalised, multi-sensory adventure.
Shaping the Future of Automotive Interaction
Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design, emphasised the significance of digital innovation: “The new BMW Panoramic iDrive not only makes our vehicles smarter and more user-friendly, but it also enables extensive personalisation, making every BMW uniquely tailored to its driver.”
With the Panoramic iDrive and Operating System X, BMW continues to lead the automotive industry in innovation and user experience. By seamlessly blending cutting-edge technology with driver-centric design, BMW redefines the relationship between human and machine, setting a new standard for the future of mobility.
