As the holiday season approaches, the automotive industry charity Ben is once again launching its heartwarming Christmas Families Project, now in its fifth year. This initiative provides vital assistance to families who might otherwise face an impossible choice between heating or eating, or wonder whether they can afford Christmas gifts for their loved ones. A lifeline to many, the project helps ensure that no family goes without food on the table, lights on, or presents under the tree.
A Legacy of Support
The Christmas Families Project was first introduced in December 2020, a response to the heightened struggles faced by automotive families during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the pressures of rising costs and the uncertainty brought on by the pandemic, many families found themselves unable to make ends meet, especially at a time traditionally associated with joy and togetherness. Ben’s initiative sought to provide immediate relief to these families, offering support for their basic living costs and ensuring that they could still experience the magic of Christmas.
Since its inception, the project has proven to be more than just a seasonal gesture. Over the last four years, Ben has supported nearly 700 adults and children, and the demand for assistance continues to grow. In fact, the charity has seen an impressive 208% increase in families helped since 2020, with 265 families, including 120 children, receiving support last year alone. As we move into 2024, Ben is prepared to assist even more families in need.
Making Christmas Possible
Through the generosity of donors and the dedication of volunteers, Ben is able to provide families with essential support. Food vouchers and financial assistance are distributed, ensuring families have access to a festive meal and the opportunity to enjoy treats that make the season special. The impact of these contributions is immeasurable, and many families have expressed their deep gratitude for the difference it has made in their lives.
One family shared: “Thank you so much for the food vouchers, it will make a huge difference to our Christmas. It’s been a really hard year, but this will lift the whole family. We have some treats to make it more special.” Another family wrote, “Although we’ve had lows, Ben has given us some highs. Now we’ll have a great Christmas day with treats, dinner, and the kids will have some lovely presents.” For some, Ben’s kindness is so overwhelming it brings tears of relief and joy: “I’m so overwhelmed by Ben’s kindness that I just burst out crying. You’ve made us so happy in what’s been a rough time. I can’t thank you enough.”
Extending Support Beyond the Holidays
While the Christmas Families Project is a highlight of Ben’s work, it is by no means the extent of the charity’s efforts. Ben provides year-round support to those working within the automotive industry, helping thousands of individuals and families navigate financial hardship and crises. The charity recognizes that many face ongoing struggles, particularly during challenging economic times. Ben is committed to ensuring that no one in the automotive family faces homelessness or has to make difficult decisions about heating their home or putting food on the table.
Rachel Clift, Chief Executive Officer of Ben, emphasized the charity’s broader mission: “We’re incredibly proud to have helped hundreds of automotive people through our Christmas Families Project over the past four years. But Ben’s not just for Christmas — we’re here for automotive people all year round, offering life-changing support to families in crisis. At a more expensive time of year, we want to make sure no automotive family goes without the opportunity to have a Christmas meal together and a gift for their children.”
