London, 12 November 2024 – As the festive season draws closer, UK motorists are preparing for what has become known as ‘Car-istmas,’ with millions expected to take to the roads to celebrate with family and friends. A recent study by The Motor Ombudsman has offered an early glimpse into the driving trends, challenges, and car-related wishes that could define this year’s Christmas journey.

Timing the Holiday Escape
The study surveyed 1,000 people to understand how they plan to tackle the holiday drive. It appears that timing is critical, with nearly a quarter (24%) of respondents indicating they intend to set off 48 hours before Christmas Day. In contrast, 13% will brave the Christmas Eve rush, navigating peak holiday traffic or waiting until Christmas Day when roads are expected to be quieter.

Drivers’ Festive Fears
While holiday cheer may be on the horizon, the survey highlighted some common concerns that drivers face during their Christmas travels. Chief among these are the fears of getting stuck in traffic (31%) and driving in bad weather, such as heavy rain or fog (30%). With unpredictable winter conditions in the UK, nearly a quarter (23%) expressed anxiety over potential vehicle breakdowns, especially if they were to occur in remote areas or during adverse weather. Concerns about punctures, driving at night, and reduced visibility were also top of mind for over a fifth (21%) of drivers.

For nearly half of the participants (49%), the potential to miss out on family celebrations was an added stressor. Many feared losing precious moments with loved ones (38%), missing out on opening presents together (15%), or arriving just in time for cold leftovers (14%).

The Cars Leading the Festive Convoy
When it comes to their vehicle of choice for the Christmas drive, the study showed a clear preference for traditional petrol cars, with 56% planning to travel in one. Diesel cars are the choice for 20%, while hybrid vehicles account for 14%. Although electric vehicles (EVs) are growing in popularity, they still represent only 8% of the vehicles expected on the road for this year’s getaway – reflecting current EV adoption rates in the UK.

Christmas Wish Lists: Car Enthusiasts’ Top Picks
The survey also unveiled some interesting insights into car enthusiasts’ holiday wish lists. At the top are practical vehicle accessories like dash cams and cleaning kits, sought by 23% of participants. Personalised number plates come in second at 17%, while tickets to automotive events such as Formula One races or the Goodwood Festival of Speed are a close third (15%). Rounding out the list of most-desired gifts are automotive-themed LEGO sets and model cars, each favoured by 13% of respondents.

Beyond specific gifts, the poll showed that many drivers prefer items with lasting value. Forty percent would choose a gift they could use throughout the year, while 20% expressed a preference for experiences that bring family members together.

Preparing for the Journey
To help drivers set off safely and with peace of mind, The Motor Ombudsman has released a series of ‘Car-istmas’ tips. Available at www.TheMotorOmbudsman.org/car-istmas, these tips cover essential preparations, from vehicle maintenance checks to advice on packing essentials and preparing for winter weather.

Bill Fennell, Managing Director and Chief Ombudsman at The Motor Ombudsman, noted, “The study paints an interesting picture of the expectations of the nation’s motorists at one of the busiest times on the UK’s road network. This period is often synonymous with congestion and long queues, when a large proportion of the country are on the move to join friends and family to celebrate together for this special end-of-year occasion.”

Fennell added, “The underlying message of our ‘Car-istmas’ campaign is that drivers should take time to prepare for the journey by ensuring their vehicles are fully roadworthy, not only for their own safety but for that of other road users.”

For drivers who need repairs before their holiday journey, The Motor Ombudsman recommends visiting an accredited repairer. These garages uphold The Motor Ombudsman’s Service and Repair Code, ensuring high standards of service and quality.

Looking Ahead to ‘Car-istmas’
As UK motorists prepare for what is shaping up to be a busy Christmas season, The Motor Ombudsman’s poll provides valuable insights into the concerns, timing, and preparations at the forefront of drivers’ minds. Whether it’s choosing the right vehicle, avoiding delays, or finding the perfect automotive gift, this year’s ‘Car-istmas’ promises to bring both challenges and holiday cheer to the roads.
