Locally, the new Volvo S80 is available with a choice of three engines: a new 2.5T petrol, new D5 diesel and the powerful 3.0T which was also found in the previous generation.

The driving experience in the refreshed Volvo S80 has been elevated with a new D5 engine that offers an impressive 151kW and 420 Nm of torque. Fuel consumption (combined) is only 6.2 l/100 km (164g/km) – a record-low figure for a car of this size and performance level. This state-of-the-art engine delivers all the fun without the headache.

The 2.5T engine has also been upgraded and now offers 170kW and 340 Nm of torque.

The new Volvo S80 is once again equipped with the powerful 3.0-litre super-compact six-cylinder in-line aluminium engine. The engine features an advanced valve train with two lift heights and a variable intake system that contributes both to good performance and considerable fuel efficiency. Several innovative solutions have also made it possible to build the engine with particularly compact overall dimensions.

The 3.0T uses twin-scroll technology and is optimised for a very sporty driving experience. It  is programmed to give the highest possible performance with the lowest possible fuel consumption and exhaust emission levels.

Like the rest of the Volvo range, the Volvo S80 has a transverse driveline and front-wheel drive, or alternatively All-Wheel Drive (AWD) in the 3.0T derivative. The transverse engine installation permits effective space utilisation for deformation in the engine compartment and also makes it possible to create a more spacious passenger compartment.

With AWD the 3.0-litre engine is utilised in an optimal manner by transferring the maximum amount of power onto the road surface. The AWD system uses an electronically controlled hydraulically activated clutch to distribute power between the front and rear wheels to provide the best possible road grip in all situations.

When it comes to chassis choice, Volvo Cars has developed two distinct alternatives – one with the cosseting feeling of supreme comfort and one truly dynamic for pure driving enjoyment. The comfort chassis will be offered as standard and the lowered sport chassis is offered as an option on all three models.

The sports chassis has a number of features that provide very sporty driving characteristics. In addition, the chassis settings give the car a stronger and more powerful impression.

The comfort-oriented chassis gives all occupants, and especially the rear seat passengers, a limousine-like experience.

The chassis with MacPherson struts at the front and Multilink axle at the rear is designed to ensure predictable driving manners and alert steering response. The Multilink rear axle is an independent suspension system with a number of links that are set up to provide a combination of controlled wheel movements and high level of riding comfort. Some of the links have the task of providing a certain degree of anti-skid steering effect. A long wheelbase and wide track together with an extremely torsionally rigid body contribute to the S80’s excellent handling characteristics.

Volvo’s advanced DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) system is fitted as standard. DSTC steps in and helps the driver bring the car back in line if there is any tendency to skid.
