Boston, July 2025 – By Breyten Odendaal
Aeramine, a UK-based advanced technology startup at the forefront of materials refinement, has emerged as a rising innovator in the field of ultra-high purity copper (UHPC). Making its debut at the prestigious MT29 Magnet Technology Conference held in Boston from 1–6 July 2025, the company drew positive attention from an audience of over 1,000 international scientists and engineers.
The annual Magnet Technology Conference—hosted this year in the intellectual heartland of Massachusetts, home to MIT and the Plasma Fusion Lab—is widely recognised as the foremost global gathering for magnet research and applications, spanning superconducting, resistive, and permanent magnet technologies.
At the centre of Aeramine’s exhibition was its novel vacuum refinement process, which enables the production of ultra-high purity copper with extremely low oxygen and impurity levels. Although copper is not magnetic by nature, its exceptional electrical conductivity is vital in enabling powerful and stable magnetic fields in advanced magnet systems.
Copper That Enables the Future of Magnetics
“Copper is the unsung hero of magnet technology,” said Aeramine co-founder and managing director Alex Lapis. “Its role in superconducting and resistive magnets is indispensable—whether it’s stabilising magnetic fields, enabling efficient current flow, or dissipating heat under extreme operating conditions.”
Aeramine’s copper, refined using a proprietary vacuum-based method, is designed to meet the rigorous standards of next-generation magnet systems and other high-value industrial applications. The company’s presence at MT29 marked a significant step in its ambition to establish itself as a key supplier of critical materials for science, technology, and energy innovation.
With the prospect of US tariffs on copper rising to 50%, Aeramine is already exploring the feasibility of setting up stateside refining operations. “We were well received in Boston,” Lapis noted. “And with changing trade dynamics, a localised production facility in the US could be a strategic move for our global supply chain.”

Sustainability Meets Scalability
Recently, Aeramine successfully concluded a £1 million Innovate UK-funded project focused on upcycling waste copper into ultra-high-purity copper powder suitable for additive manufacturing and advanced electronics. The project highlights the company’s commitment to sustainability through closed-loop refining and atomisation techniques, reducing the environmental footprint of high-performance metal production.
“Our approach not only delivers the purity required for high-end applications, but it also dramatically cuts waste and improves energy efficiency,” said Lapis. “It’s part of our broader mission to make ultra-high-purity materials more accessible and environmentally responsible.”
From the UK Tech Corridor to the World Stage
Headquartered in the UK’s Oxford-Cambridge technology corridor, Aeramine is strategically positioned within a government-supported cluster of innovation. The region is a focal point of the UK’s ambition to lead in science and technology, supported by nine research-intensive universities and a network of progressive investors and entrepreneurs.
Following the successful closure of its £700,000 pre-seed funding round, Aeramine is now preparing for its next phase of fundraising. The company aims to scale production, broaden its commercial partnerships, and expand into key international markets.
Positioned for the Next Generation of Tech
Copper’s role in magnet technology—especially in superconducting applications such as MRI machines, fusion reactors, and particle accelerators—cannot be overstated. It enables high current densities, acts as a thermal and electrical stabiliser, and supports the reliability of these highly sensitive systems.
While the 2025 MT29 Conference offered a deep dive into cutting-edge magnetic technologies and their enabling components such as cryogenics, it also underscored the rising importance of supply chain resilience and material purity—areas in which Aeramine is poised to make a lasting impact.
With global industries increasingly turning to high-performance materials to meet growing energy, computing, and sustainability demands, Aeramine’s ultra-high purity copper may prove to be one of the essential building blocks of the next technological revolution.
