Rolls-Royce Motor Cars London has officially ushered in its Summer Season with an appearance of poised sophistication at the prestigious Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic, held this week at The Hurlingham Club in West London. Nestled along the banks of the River Thames, the Club’s lush 42-acre estate provided the perfect backdrop for the marque’s discerning clientele to experience the effortless grandeur and quiet luxury for which Rolls-Royce is renowned.

This marks the beginning of a series of curated summer occasions in which Rolls-Royce will maintain a refined yet unmistakable presence across London and throughout Britain. From tennis courts to country estates, each event has been meticulously selected to reflect the lifestyle and tastes of Rolls-Royce’s distinguished clients.

“At Rolls-Royce, we strive to offer our clients unique experiences and encounters, in pinnacle enclaves and settings that reflect their tastes, lifestyles and interests,” said Boris Weletzky, Regional Director, United Kingdom, Europe and Central Asia, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “As one of Britain’s most prestigious private members’ clubs, The Hurlingham Club is a perfect fit. Its unrivalled facilities, magnificent sporting occasions and London location, which is home to many of our clients, only add to its appeal. It’s also a place with real meaning for Rolls-Royce, indelibly associated with the marque’s co-founder, The Hon. Charles Stewart Rolls and his own remarkable sporting exploits at the dawn of the 20th Century.”

Where History and Heritage Intertwine

The Hurlingham Club, founded in 1869, remains a bastion of British sporting and social tradition. Revered for its formal gardens and immaculate grass courts, the club has long played host to quintessential summer pursuits—from croquet and lawn tennis to the noble game of polo, whose modern rules were first codified on its grounds.

It is here, amid this storied setting, that Rolls-Royce’s legacy finds one of its earliest champions: The Honourable Charles Stewart Rolls. Aristocrat, engineer, and adventurer, Rolls was not merely a co-founder of the world’s most celebrated automotive marque—he was a pioneer in every sense of the word. His appetite for speed and innovation drove him to the cutting edge of technology in the early 1900s, and The Hurlingham Club was often his launchpad.

The Skyward Spirit of Charles Rolls

Long before he made aviation history, Charles Rolls thrilled crowds with feats of daring in another airborne pursuit—ballooning. The Hurlingham Club became the heart of this captivating new sport in Edwardian Britain, with Rolls taking to the skies in gas-filled balloons whose grace belied their inherent danger. In 1908, the Aero Club of the United Kingdom staged a now-legendary “hare and hounds” race from Hurlingham, with Rolls leading the charge in his balloon The Imp. The competitors—a colourful cast of nobility, officers and society notables—vividly illustrate the rarefied world from which Rolls-Royce was born.

The whimsical and perilous nature of early ballooning was matched only by its glamour, and stories abound of dramatic landings and close brushes with Victorian infrastructure. For Rolls, the risks were part of the thrill. It was a natural precursor to his next obsession: powered flight.

By 1910, the same lawns that once hosted balloon launches bore witness to Rolls’ fledgling attempts at fixed-wing aviation—often in contravention of laws and common sense alike. That same year, he became the first aviator to complete a non-stop double crossing of the English Channel, earning national fame in his Wright Flyer. The aircraft, like the balloon before it, was brought back to London for display near Hurlingham—via motor car under cover of darkness, no less, lest the road trip itself draw legal attention.

A Summer of Meaning

It is fitting, then, that Rolls-Royce returns to The Hurlingham Club not merely as a partner of the Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic, but as a custodian of a legacy entwined with this hallowed ground. While the format may be more refined and the attire more formal, the spirit remains unchanged: a celebration of excellence, elegance, and a life lived without compromise.

Throughout the tournament, invited guests of Rolls-Royce will enjoy an elevated experience that reflects the brand’s unerring attention to detail and its ability to create moments of deep personal resonance. Surrounded by manicured lawns, world-class sport, and historic echoes, they are invited to step into a world shaped by heritage, guided by innovation, and defined by taste.

As the Summer Season unfolds, Rolls-Royce will continue to host its clients at some of Britain’s most exclusive events—each chosen not merely for their prestige, but for their connection to the spirit of a marque that has never been content to simply follow the road. Whether by land, by balloon, or by sky, Rolls-Royce has always been about leading the way—with purpose, grace and unwavering conviction.
