The Paris Motor Show 2024 is set to host an exciting revelation from Renault, as the brand prepares to unveil the Twingo E-Tech electric prototype—an urban electric vehicle that promises to carry forward the legacy of its beloved predecessor while rising to the challenges of modern city driving. From 14 to 20 October 2024, visitors will get their first look at this concept car, which pays tribute to the original Twingo’s spirit and previews the production version expected to hit the market in 2026.

Renault’s Twingo, first introduced in 1992, was a game-changer. With its quirky design, joyful demeanor, and emphasis on making everyday journeys enjoyable, the Twingo became synonymous with Renault’s “voitures à vivre”—cars built for life. Now, over 30 years later, the Twingo E-Tech electric prototype rekindles that same energy, but with a forward-looking twist: this is an electric city car designed for the future.

A Nostalgic Design with a Modern Electric Twist
Renault’s Twingo E-Tech electric prototype draws heavily on the iconic features that made the original so beloved, from its compact monovolume silhouette to its playful, expressive headlamps. But while it honours the past, this prototype is thoroughly modern, delivering all the benefits of electric mobility without compromising on the character that Twingo enthusiasts remember so fondly.

Compact and agile, the Twingo E-Tech is tailor-made for the urban environment, where space is often limited. Its small footprint makes navigating tight city streets a breeze, while its five-door configuration ensures that practicality remains paramount. The car’s fixed glass roof floods the interior with natural light, giving it a sense of openness, and reinforcing Renault’s commitment to creating cars that are as delightful to live with as they are to drive.

On the outside, liquid-like surfaces and up-to-the-minute design touches give the Twingo E-Tech an unmistakably modern look, while several nods to its predecessor add a layer of nostalgia. Floating LED rings in the headlamps evoke the mischievous gaze of the original, while protruding taillights echo the playful proportions that made the first Twingo such a hit.

A glance at the rear also reveals a design cue from the past—the black rim around the rear windshield, a feature that brings a modern flair to the iconic tailgate design. Cheerful Twingo lettering in the centre of the tailgate and a techy finish to the lights round off a design that expertly balances past and present.

Endearing Personality, Familiar Vibe
Renault has ensured that the Twingo E-Tech electric prototype does more than look good. This car has an expressive, endearing face that channels the personality of the original. Its front end, adorned with the brand’s emblem, exudes familiarity and complicity, almost as if the car is engaging in a light-hearted conversation with onlookers.

The rounded, beaming headlamps play a central role in this, jutting out from the body in a manner that feels both fresh and recognisable. This unmistakable blend of modernity and nostalgia ensures that, like its predecessor, the Twingo E-Tech will stand out in the cityscape.

An Interior Filled with Light and Legacy
Inside, the glass roof opens up the passenger cabin to the world outside, filling it with natural light and adding to the sense of space within this compact urban vehicle. For those familiar with the 1992 Twingo, certain interior touches will feel like a heartfelt tribute—especially the rebooted round door handles, which have been reimagined with a luminous rim to add a modern, high-tech flair to a beloved design feature.

Elsewhere, the prototype sports three small openings on the bonnet, a subtle nod to its petrol-powered ancestor. In this electric iteration, however, these openings serve purely as a design feature, reminding us of the car’s legacy while embracing a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Accessible Electric Mobility for All
The Twingo E-Tech electric prototype is not just a design exercise—it also represents Renault’s vision of making electric mobility accessible to a wider audience. Set to enter the market in 2026, the production version of this all-electric city car will start at under €20,000, making it one of the most affordable electric vehicles in its class. Developed by Ampere, the Twingo E-Tech will join a growing lineup of electric vehicles from Renault, including the Renault 5 E-Tech, Renault 4 E-Tech, Megane E-Tech, and Scenic E-Tech.

With the unveiling of the Twingo E-Tech electric prototype, Renault is poised to capture the imagination of a new generation of urban drivers while continuing to honour the legacy of a car that redefined city mobility more than three decades ago. The future is electric, but as the Twingo E-Tech proves, that future can still be fun, expressive, and full of life.

Renault has once again shown that when it comes to “les voitures à vivre”, the spirit of Twingo is alive and well—ready to lead the charge into the electric era.
