Independence Day 4th of July 2012 Google Doodle

Today 4th of July the United States of America is celebrating the declaration of independence of the United States. On the 4th of July 4, 1976 the United States declared its independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Modern day Independence day is often celebrated with fireworks, barbecues, parades, fairs, baseball games, carnivals and family reunions.

“He that would make his own liberty secure, must guard even his enemy from opposition; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach himself.” 4th of July ~Thomas Paine

Independence Day is a national holiday marked by patriotic displays. If you drive through the streets you will see Americans displaying the US Flag everywhere. Flags flapping on roads have become a signature part of celebrating the 4th of July. They join the familiar flags on patriotic holidays – those that mark the gravestones of veterans in cemeteries – and the flags that fly year-round at town halls, police and fire stations and other public buildings.

Traditional 4th of July Songs

Independence Day fireworks are often accompanied by patriotic songs such as the national anthem “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee”, “Stars and Stripes Forever”, “God Bless America”, “America the Beautiful”, “This Land Is Your Land”, “The Star-Spangled Banner”, “Yankee Doodle” in northeastern states and “Dixie” in southern states.

Original Lyrics for “This Land is Your Land”

This land is your land, this land is my land

From California to the New York Island

From the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters

This land was made for you and me.

As I went walking that ribbon of highway

I saw above me that endless skyway

I saw below me that golden valley

This land was made for you and me.

I roamed and I rambled and I followed my footsteps

To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts

While all around me a voice was sounding

This land was made for you and me.

When the sun came shining, and I was strolling

And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling

A voice was chanting, As the fog was lifting,

This land was made for you and me.

This land is your land, this land is my land

From California to the New York Island

From the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters

This land was made for you and me.
