In a market where brand loyalty is increasingly fleeting and vehicle ownership cycles are shortening, Yugan Munthrie’s 26-year relationship with Hyundai stands as a rare and deeply human counterpoint. What began as a single purchase in 2000 has evolved into a multi-vehicle family journey, marked by trust, consistency, and an enduring belief in the brand.
Munthrie’s story started at a Hyundai dealership in the East Rand, where he first encountered the Hyundai ELANTRA J5. The moment was unplanned but decisive, shaped by instinct rather than spreadsheets.
“I remember walking into the showroom at The Glen and seeing the Hyundai ELANTRA J5 on the floor. It just felt right,” he said. “It was a big decision at the time, but I trusted my instinct and it paid off.”
That instinct would prove to be remarkably accurate. The ELANTRA J5 quickly became more than a vehicle. It became part of the family’s rhythm, woven into daily routines, milestones, and memories that defined their early years together on the road.
One of the most lasting impressions came during an early long-distance family trip, a moment that quietly cemented Munthrie’s confidence in his choice.
“Our first proper drive was a family trip and it was effortless, comfortable, smooth and no stress at all,” he recalled. “That was when I realised I had made the right choice.”
More than two decades later, that same ELANTRA J5 has crossed the 400,000 km mark, still operating in notably strong mechanical condition. Aside from routine servicing, it has required no major mechanical overhauls, a testament to its durability in real-world South African driving conditions, where road quality, climate, and distance often test vehicles to their limits.
For Munthrie, the car’s longevity is not just mechanical, but emotional. It represents reliability that has consistently delivered peace of mind.
“It has been incredibly reliable, safe and still looks as stunning as the first time I laid my eyes on it,” he said. “It is such qualities that have kept me and my family staying loyal to the Hyundai brand for 26 years.”
That loyalty did not stop with a single model. Over time, the Munthrie household expanded its Hyundai footprint, adding models such as the GETZ, TIBURON, and TUCSON. Each vehicle fulfilled a different role, yet all shared a consistent ownership experience that reinforced the family’s trust in the brand.
This rare level of long-term commitment has now been formally recognised at the highest level of Hyundai Automotive South Africa. CEO Stanley Anderson recently met with Munthrie to personally acknowledge the journey.
“Meeting Yugan was incredibly special,” said Anderson. “It is rare to see this kind of long-term relationship between a customer and a brand. His experience reflects what we aim to achieve each day, which is, to sell quality, reliable vehicles and deliver an exceptional aftersales experience.”
What emerges from Munthrie’s story is not just a tale of a single car or even a single brand, but a reflection of how consistency builds trust over time. In an automotive landscape often driven by change, his 26-year Hyundai journey offers something increasingly uncommon: continuity that endures, mile after mile.
