GQEBERHA – ISUZU Motors South Africa has unveiled the enhanced 2026 MU-X, strengthening its position as a versatile SUV that blends rugged capability with modern comfort, intelligent safety technology, and refined performance. Designed to meet the demands of both urban drivers and adventure-focused families, the latest MU-X introduces a series of meaningful upgrades aimed at improving convenience, efficiency, and driver confidence.
The updated MU-X builds on the reputation established by previous models, offering the durability and practicality expected from the ISUZU brand while refining the overall driving experience. With improvements focused on active safety systems, driver assistance technology, and powertrain refinement, the 2026 line-up delivers a more connected and confidence-inspiring package for South African motorists.
According to Kevin Fouchè, Product Planning Department Executive at ISUZU Motors South Africa, the latest MU-X enhances the strengths of the current model while introducing smarter technology and improved refinement across the range.
One of the most significant additions arrives in the ONYX XT derivatives, which now feature Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control for the first time. The system automatically adjusts vehicle speed to maintain a safe following distance from traffic ahead, reducing driver fatigue during long-distance travel and easing the stress of stop-start traffic conditions. For many SUV buyers, particularly those frequently travelling between cities or exploring South Africa’s extensive road network, this feature adds a new layer of convenience and safety.
ISUZU has also expanded the MU-X’s intelligent safety suite with the inclusion of Traffic Sign Recognition and an Intelligent Speed Limiter. Using a forward-facing camera, the system detects road signs and speed limits, helping drivers remain aware of changing speed restrictions while reducing the risk of unintentional speeding. These additions contribute to a more reassuring driving experience, especially on unfamiliar routes and busy highways.
Further technology enhancements include a dedicated USB port integrated into the stereo camera system on ONYX XT models, reinforcing the SUV’s focus on modern connectivity and convenience.
Under the bonnet, ISUZU has refined the proven 1.9-litre turbodiesel engine available on LS derivatives. While outputs remain unchanged at 110 kW and 350 Nm, the updated calibration improves power delivery and fuel efficiency, creating a smoother and more responsive driving experience. The larger 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine continues unchanged across LS, LSE, and ONYX XT models, producing 140 kW and 450 Nm. Both engines remain paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, with selected models available in either 4x2 or 4x4 configurations.
Convenience has also been improved across the entire MU-X range. Every model now includes Headlamp Welcome Lights as standard, automatically illuminating the low beam and parking lamps when the vehicle is remotely unlocked. The feature enhances visibility and security in low-light environments while offering owners the flexibility to customise or disable the function through the vehicle settings.
The 2026 MU-X continues to offer the premium features that have helped establish its appeal in the competitive SUV market. Higher-specification variants retain the hands-free power tailgate, while the nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Drivers also benefit from a seven-inch multi-information display, while LSE and ONYX XT models continue to feature a 360-degree Surround View Monitor for easier parking and manoeuvring in tight spaces.
Ride comfort remains a key focus, with larger diameter shock absorbers continuing to provide composed handling across both urban roads and rough terrain. The range-topping ONYX XT maintains its distinctive appearance through gloss black exterior styling elements, red ambient interior lighting, and exclusive XT badging that further separates it from the rest of the line-up.
As the South African SUV market continues to evolve, ISUZU’s latest MU-X positions itself as a compelling option for buyers seeking a balance between family comfort, long-distance touring capability, and dependable off-road performance. With enhanced intelligent safety systems, improved refinement, and practical everyday features, the 2026 MU-X is engineered to confidently handle everything from city commutes to demanding adventure routes.
The updated MU-X demonstrates ISUZU’s continued commitment to combining reliability, versatility, and modern technology in a package built for South African roads and lifestyles. Somewhere out there, a gravel road is already nervously checking its life insurance.
