The much-anticipated 2025 South African Rotax MAX Challenge (SARMCC) is set to kick off this weekend at the Killarney Kart Track in Cape Town, as the Toyota Gazoo Racing Junior Academy (TGRJA) prepares to take the first step in what promises to be an exhilarating season. This prestigious championship, which serves as South Africa’s gateway to the global spectacle of the Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals (RMCGF), has long been regarded as the “Olympics of Karting,” and the season opener is sure to set the stage for what will be a thrilling four-round series.
A Season Like No Other
The opening round at Killarney Kart Track will be the first of four rounds across three provinces. After the action in Cape Town, the championship will move north to the Vereeniging Kart Circuit in Gauteng, then head to the iconic iDube Raceway in KwaZulu-Natal. The season will culminate in a return to Zwartkops Kart Raceway in Gauteng, a circuit steeped in Rotax MAX Challenge history, having hosted the 2002 RMCGF.
With national titles on the line, the stakes have never been higher. Drivers who secure victories in their respective classes will earn coveted invitations to the 2025 RMCGF, where they will represent South Africa on the international stage in Bahrain. The TGRJA has a proud tradition of developing national champions and RMCGF competitors, and all eyes will be on the academy’s talented drivers as they look to extend this legacy.
Killarney Kart Track: A Thrilling Challenge
Located within the Killarney International Raceway and managed by the Western Province Motor Club (WPMC), the Killarney Kart Track is a 1,000-metre circuit known for its unique combination of long straights, sweeping bends, and tight technical corners. This challenging layout will provide the perfect setting for the season opener, testing the skills of all drivers.
While many of South Africa’s karting champions have emerged from the Western Cape, the Killarney Kart Track holds special significance for the academy’s own Jason Coetzee. The DD2 driver, who finished third in the national championship in 2024, is familiar with every inch of this circuit and will be looking to leverage his local knowledge to his advantage as he embarks on a new season with the academy.

New Faces, New Talent
The 2025 season also sees a host of fresh faces eager to make their mark on the championship. Among them are Namibian twins Madume and Nande Kaiyamo, who are continuing their careers in the competitive Mini MAX category. The young duo has recently honed their skills at the Northern Regions Rotax Kart Championships in Benoni and are ready to bring that experience to the national stage at Killarney.
Tshepang Shisinwana, the reigning national Mini MAX champion and 2024 RMCGF participant, will make his national debut in TGRJA colours. Having competed at the Northern Regions event earlier this month, Shisinwana is ready to take on the challenge in the Mini MAX category. He will be joined by one of the academy’s promising young female talents, Emma-Rose Dowling. Like Tshepang, Emma-Rose brings international experience to the table, having recently competed in the opening round of the Champions of the Future Academy Program in Portugal.
Another exciting addition to the TGRJA ranks is Georgia Lenaerts, a name no stranger to competitive karting. She will compete nationally in the academy’s colours for the first time in 2025, and with her experience, she will be a formidable force in the Senior MAX class. Joining Lenaerts in this category is Kent Swartz, a former national Junior MAX Champion and 2023 and 2024 RMCGF finalist. Together, they form a dynamic duo that is sure to capture the attention of fans and competitors alike.
All Eyes on the TGRJA
As the first round approaches, all eyes will be on the TGRJA drivers as they battle for early championship momentum. With a mix of experienced racers and hungry new talent, the academy is poised for an exciting season opener in Cape Town.
The weekend’s schedule kicks off with practice sessions on Thursday, followed by more practice on Friday. The grid for Saturday’s race will be set during the late afternoon qualifying session, while Saturday morning will feature a warm-up for all classes. After that, the drivers will face off in three race heats, with the overall round winner crowned at the end of the day.
For those who can’t attend in person, the event will be live-streamed on the promoter’s YouTube channel, giving karting fans around the world a front-row seat to all the action.
The 2025 South African Rotax MAX Challenge season opener promises to be a thrilling start to what will undoubtedly be an action-packed year of competitive karting. With a blend of seasoned veterans and rising stars, the TGRJA is primed to take on the challenge and make its mark on this prestigious championship. As the road to the Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals in Bahrain begins, the excitement and anticipation surrounding this season have never been greater.
