The picturesque Killarney International Race Circuit in Cape Town is poised for a thrilling weekend as the 2024 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing SA GR Cup heads into its penultimate round of the season. With championship battles intensifying across all categories, this weekend’s races promise excitement and fierce competition as drivers aim to secure critical points ahead of the season finale.

GR Cup Media Challenge (GR Corolla)
In the highly competitive GR Cup Media Challenge, Sean Nurse from AutoTrader leads the standings with 63 points despite facing mechanical difficulties that forced his retirement in East London’s second race. As the points leader, Nurse will look to rebound in Cape Town, where a strong performance could solidify his title campaign.

However, close on his heels is Alex Shahini from CAR, who is riding high after securing his first victory of the season in Race 2. Shahini sits in second place with 44 points and will be eager to close the gap, knowing that strong results this weekend could keep his title hopes alive. Meanwhile, Hannes Visser of La’t Wiel remains third with 30 points, having faced his own set of challenges in recent rounds.

The upcoming races could see a shake-up in the standings as both Jaco van der Merwe (Citizen) and Kumbi Mtshakazi (Kumbi-M on Cars) continue to push for a podium finish. Bernie Hellberg from Driven, who missed the previous round after a crash during qualifying, will also be back in action and aiming for redemption at Killarney.

GR Cup Dealer Challenge (GR Yaris)
In the Dealer Challenge, the GR Driving Academy continues to lead the standings with consistent performances throughout the season. Close behind is Mario de Sousa from GR Zone Motus Bedfordview, whose persistence has kept the competition tight. As the season approaches its conclusion, the fight for supremacy remains open, and this weekend could prove pivotal in determining the championship outcome.

GR86 Development Academy
The GR86 Development Academy has been dominated by Dawie van der Merwe, who holds a flawless record of 70 points after five rounds. Van der Merwe’s commanding performances have made him the driver to beat, but his rivals, including Niko Zafiris and Dylan Pragji, who are second and third with 41 and 32 points respectively, are not far behind.

Zafiris and Pragji will be looking to cut into van der Merwe’s lead and prevent him from extending his perfect run. Further down the order, both Setshaba Mashigo and Ryan Naicker have shown flashes of brilliance in recent races and will be looking to make their mark in Cape Town as they aim for the podium.

The Road Ahead in Cape Town
With cool but dry weather forecast for the weekend, ideal track conditions at Killarney will provide the perfect stage for a high-stakes battle. Friday’s practice sessions will offer drivers a chance to dial in their setups, while Saturday will see qualifying followed by two intense race heats that could determine the fate of the championships.

As the 2024 GR Cup reaches its penultimate round, the pressure is on. Drivers across all categories will need to push their limits at Killarney International Race Circuit to secure vital points and keep their title aspirations alive. With the season finale looming, fans can expect an action-packed weekend filled with dramatic twists, strategic racing, and the kind of edge-of-your-seat excitement that only motorsport can deliver.
