Volkswagen has opened the doors to the all-new ID. Polo, offering a first look at an interior that signals a clear shift in how future ID. models will feel, function and connect with their drivers. Shaped directly by customer feedback, the near-production concept introduces a redesigned cockpit architecture that blends intuitive operation, high-quality materials and a welcome return to physical controls, all wrapped in Volkswagen’s new ‘Pure Positive’ design language.
At the heart of the ID. Polo’s interior philosophy is clarity. The layout has been systematically optimised to reduce complexity, improve usability and create a calm, inviting atmosphere that punches above the car’s compact dimensions. From the placement of the displays to the tactile feel of buttons and surfaces, every element has been rethought to make daily driving more intuitive and more enjoyable.
Volkswagen’s renewed focus on user-friendly design is immediately evident. Physical buttons return for key functions, including climate control and hazard lights, while newly structured screens adopt familiar Volkswagen operating patterns. The result is an interface that feels instantly recognisable, even as it embraces a new electric identity. Displays feature clear information and tidy menu structures, supported by a newly developed multi-function steering wheel with logically arranged button fields for confident, distraction-free operation.
The sense of quality is equally deliberate. Fabric-covered dashboard sections and door inserts create a warm, welcoming feel, reinforcing Volkswagen’s long-standing reputation for delivering a higher-class impression in the small and compact car segments. Every touchpoint, from switches to handles, has been designed to feel solid and reassuring, helping to foster a positive emotional connection from the very first drive.
Powering this experience is a new generation of Volkswagen software, debuting in the ID. Polo. It introduces features designed to enhance comfort and ease of use, including one-pedal driving and advanced parking assistance systems. Optional third-generation Travel Assist further elevates the technology offering, with the ability to recognise red traffic lights and stop signs, supporting a smoother and more relaxed driving experience.
“The new interior architecture elevates the customer experience to a new level,” says Kai Grünitz, Volkswagen Brand Board Member for Technical Development. “Clean lines, high-quality materials and intuitive operation come together with our next software generation, delivering noticeably more comfort and functionality for our customers.”
Visually, the cockpit is defined by a strong horizontal orientation. Two large displays sit on a single line of sight: a 10.25-inch digital cockpit behind the steering wheel and an almost 13-inch central infotainment touchscreen, a standout feature in the segment. High-resolution graphics ensure excellent readability, while thoughtful positioning allows easy access for both driver and front passenger. Below the infotainment screen, a dedicated control strip houses climate and hazard functions, reinforcing the focus on simplicity and usability.
Practical touches continue throughout the cabin. A rotary controller for audio functions is positioned between the smartphone tray and cup holders, allowing intuitive volume and track adjustments for both front occupants. Volkswagen’s ID.Light system has also evolved, now extending across the dashboard and into the front doors, using light cues to support communication and guidance while driving.
Adding a playful emotional layer is what Volkswagen’s designers call the ‘Secret Sauce’. In the ID. Polo, this takes the form of a retro display mode. At the touch of a button, the digital instruments transform into classic visuals inspired by the original Golf of the 1980s, a charming nod to Volkswagen heritage that adds personality to the high-tech environment.
Chief Designer Andreas Mindt sums up the philosophy behind the model: “The all-new ID. Polo is an affordable friend for everyday life. Clear physical buttons provide trust, warm materials make it appealing, and charming details like the retro instrument views give it a typical Volkswagen wink. It’s a compact car with a big heart.”
As a near-production concept, the ID. Polo is not yet available for sale, but its interior sets a clear direction for Volkswagen’s electric future. Customer-focused, emotionally engaging and refreshingly intuitive, it represents a confident step forward for the brand’s next generation of compact electric vehicles.
