Milton Keynes – Few cars can claim the enduring appeal, versatility, and cultural relevance of the Volkswagen Polo. This year, as the much-loved supermini celebrates its 50th anniversary, it has been awarded Best Car of the Half Century in the Best Cars of the Year – The New Car World Championships. The accolade, announced ahead of the British Motor Show, cements the Polo’s status as one of the most successful small cars of all time.
Since its debut in 1975, the Polo has sold more than 20 million units worldwide across six generations – an extraordinary feat in automotive history. Recognised for its blend of timeless design, efficiency, and reliability, the Polo has evolved far beyond its humble beginnings. Once a minimalist city runabout, the modern Mk6 model now stands as a refined, feature-rich, and near-premium compact hatchback – proof of Volkswagen’s commitment to continuous innovation.
The award was decided by a distinguished panel of automotive experts, including world-renowned designers, engineers, industry leaders, motorsport icons, and journalists. Among them was Mike Rutherford, founder of the Best Cars of the Year initiative, who praised the Polo’s remarkable consistency.
“The 20 million motorists who have been buying Volkswagen Polos since 1975 cannot be wrong,” said Rutherford. “It’s the most consistently credible supermini of the past 50 years – strong on affordability, durability, and longevity. From the MK1 to today’s Mk6, it has grown in size, stature, and market relevance, while still hitting the sweet spot in design, quality, and value.”

The Polo’s versatility has played a key role in its enduring success. For everyday drivers, it represents accessible, dependable mobility. For enthusiasts, it offers a surprisingly sporty edge – from the characterful GT and G40 models of the past to the adrenaline-fuelled GTI of today. Its motorsport credentials are equally formidable, with the Polo R WRC claiming four World Rally Championship titles, proving that ‘small but mighty’ is more than just a marketing phrase.
The honour follows in the tyre tracks of the Volkswagen Golf, which was similarly named Best Car of the Half Century in 2024 during its own 50th anniversary celebrations – a testament to the strength of Volkswagen’s legacy in crafting cars that define their segments for generations.
As the British Motor Show opens its doors at Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre, visitors will have the chance to see the Polo alongside other icons of motoring history. For Volkswagen, the award is not just a milestone, but a reaffirmation that the Polo’s winning formula – style, practicality, and lasting quality – remains as relevant today as it was half a century ago.
