In a dramatic turn of events at the Circuit of the Americas, Toyota Gazoo Racing experienced a heart-wrenching near-miss at the Lone Star Le Mans, the sixth round of the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). Despite delivering an outstanding performance, a contentious penalty denied them a well-deserved victory.
The team’s journey to the top spot was marked by resilience and tactical acumen. After struggling through qualifying, Toyota Gazoo Racing capitalized on the potential of their GR010 HYBRIDs with a strategy combining exceptional driving, clever tyre management, and rapid pit stops. Drivers Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi, and Nyck de Vries showcased their skill and determination throughout the race, positioning the #7 GR010 HYBRID for what seemed like a certain victory.
However, the race took a dramatic twist in the final stages. A late penalty for a yellow flag incident—an infraction that Toyota’s data suggests was mirrored by their competitors without consequence—shifted the outcome. The penalty dropped the #7 car from the lead to second place, just 1.780 seconds behind the victorious #83 Ferrari of AF Corse.
The #8 GR010 HYBRID, piloted by World Champions Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley, and Ryo Hirakawa, also had a challenging day. After a promising start, an incident in the fifth hour hindered their progress, ultimately leading to a 15th-place finish.
Despite the setbacks, Toyota Gazoo Racing’s performance at Lone Star Le Mans has positioned them favorably in the manufacturers’ championship. With an 11-point lead over Porsche, the team heads into their home race, the 6 Hours of Fuji, with renewed determination.

The race unfolded with Mike Conway starting from ninth and making a remarkable recovery, including a daring overtake on lap eight that moved him into sixth place. His strong performance, coupled with Nyck de Vries’ consistent efforts, brought the #7 GR010 HYBRID into a competitive position. As the race progressed, aggressive strategies and a well-timed pit stop allowed Kamui Kobayashi to briefly lead, only for the late penalty to dash their hopes.
In contrast, the #8 car struggled with an unfortunate incident involving Sébastien Buemi and the #6 Porsche, resulting in a 30-second stop-go penalty and further complications. Despite these issues, the team’s overall execution was commendable, with impressive performances from all drivers.
Post-race comments reflected a mix of frustration and optimism. Kamui Kobayashi expressed disappointment over the penalty but praised the team’s effort. Mike Conway highlighted the team’s resilience and the potential for a strong comeback. Nyck de Vries, while recognizing the disappointment, remained optimistic about future races. Sébastien Buemi and Brendon Hartley both acknowledged the team’s strong performance and expressed hope for better outcomes in the upcoming home race.
As Toyota Gazoo Racing prepares for the 6 Hours of Fuji, the lessons learned and the spirit demonstrated at Lone Star Le Mans will undoubtedly fuel their drive for success. The team’s ability to turn a challenging race into a strategic advantage sets the stage for an exciting continuation of the championship.
