In a commanding display of excellence, the fourth-generation Suzuki Swift — South Africa’s best-selling passenger vehicle in April — has been crowned the Budget Category Winner at the 2025 South African Car of the Year (SA COTY) Awards. The popular hatchback also secured the overall runner-up spot, finishing just behind the BMW X3 and notably ahead of the formidable BMW M5.
Presented by the South African Guild of Mobility Journalists and sponsored by Old Mutual Insure, the SA COTY Awards are widely regarded as the country’s most prestigious automotive accolades. The competition is globally unique for incorporating a rigorous physical evaluation alongside data-driven scoring, with 17 finalists scrutinised by 27 expert jurors over two demanding days of testing at Zwartkops Raceway in March.
Safety and Value at the Forefront
Launched in South Africa at the end of 2024, the new Suzuki Swift impressed the jury with its best-in-class safety credentials — a rare strength in the budget segment. Standard features include six airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Programme, rear ISOFIX anchor points, and five three-point seatbelts complete with audible and visual reminders. It’s a safety package that far exceeds expectations for vehicles under R300,000.
These features, along with the Swift’s smart packaging and practicality, also saw it take top honours at the 2025 Cars.co.za Consumer Awards in February, where it won Best Budget Car. This marks Suzuki’s seventh win in the category and the fifth time the Swift has led the charge, further cementing its legacy as a segment leader.

Competitive Edge in a Crowded Arena
Brendon Carpenter, Brand Marketing Manager at Suzuki Auto South Africa, highlights the significance of the win in an increasingly crowded and competitive entry-level market:
“Customers are looking for vehicles that are not only affordable to buy, run and maintain but also packed with the latest gadgets, engine technology and safety equipment,” says Carpenter. “To have the new fourth-generation Swift chosen as SA COTY’s Best Budget Car is not only a massive honour but a real testament to what it offers consumers.”
SA COTY’s robust scoring methodology also includes Lightstone Auto data, factoring in public perception, market share, sales performance and value-for-money. These metrics played a key role in the Swift’s second-place finish overall, a remarkable feat for a hatchback competing alongside premium nameplates.
Global Recognition, Local Pride
The Swift’s success in South Africa mirrors its international acclaim. Most recently, the hatchback was named 2025 RJC Car of the Year by Japan’s Automotive Researchers’ and Journalists’ Conference. The jury praised its sleek styling, revised 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine, nimble dynamics and impressive road manners — traits underpinned by the car’s lightweight yet rigid HEARTECT platform and recalibrated suspension system.
A Swift Victory
For Suzuki, the 2025 SA COTY recognition is more than just a trophy — it’s a validation of its enduring mission to provide reliable, accessible and well-equipped cars to the market.
“This award belongs to every Suzuki driver, fan and team member who stands behind our brand,” says Carpenter. “We’re humbled to receive this recognition and proud to see the Swift delivering on its promise of value and quality.”
As the local hatchback market continues to evolve, the Suzuki Swift stands out not just as a budget-friendly option, but as a benchmark — one that proves you don’t have to compromise on safety, quality or driving enjoyment, even on a modest budget.
