One man. One island. Over 1,000 miles of unforgiving ocean. In a challenge that fuses endurance, exploration and environmental science, Ross Edgley is set to etch a new chapter in human achievement — and ocean conservation.
In May 2025, Ross Edgley — ultra-endurance athlete, adventurer and ocean advocate — will embark on one of the most audacious feats in modern exploration: swimming the entire coastline of Iceland, a distance exceeding 1,000 miles (1,610 km), in just 100 days.
The challenge, aptly named The Great Icelandic Swim, is more than a test of physical and mental limits. It’s a mission driven by science, sustainability, and a deep respect for the ocean’s fragile ecosystems — all powered by BMW, with the all-electric BMW iX serving as the expedition’s official support vehicle.
Pushing the Limits of Endurance in the Land of Fire and Ice
Edgley, who made history in 2018 as the first person to swim around Great Britain and again in 2024 with the world’s longest non-stop river swim down the Yukon, describes this next challenge as his most formidable yet. Iceland’s coastline is renowned for its beauty — and its brutality.
With 20-metre waves, sub-zero waters, sandstorms, and volcanic ash winds reaching 260 km/h, the North Atlantic offers a punishing backdrop. To succeed, Edgley will need to swim over 30 km per day, facing down killer whales, sea ice, and sheer physical exhaustion.
“It’s like swimming the English Channel every single day — but in water as cold as 1°C,” Edgley notes.
Swimming for Science: A Citizen Science Expedition
Beyond the athleticism lies a pioneering citizen science mission. Partnering with top researchers from the University of Iceland, University of Victoria (Canada), and the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute of Iceland, Edgley will collect daily eDNA samples to help map marine biodiversity and microplastic distribution in coastal waters.
The expedition is a vital part of the EU BioProtect project, giving researchers unprecedented access to Iceland’s rarely studied coastal zones — regions often inaccessible due to the lack of small research vessels. Every stroke Edgley takes will contribute to protecting our oceans for future generations.
Christophe Pampoulie, Research Director at the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute, calls the collaboration “a unique opportunity” that will “drastically improve our knowledge on species distribution and biodiversity.”

BMW iX: A Next-Gen Support System for a Next-Level Mission
Traversing Iceland’s unpredictable terrain requires more than endurance. It calls for innovation and efficiency — values BMW brings to the table with the all-electric BMW iX.
With a WLTP range of up to 426 miles, all-wheel drive, and advanced pre-conditioning systems to handle the cold, the iX is engineered to withstand Iceland’s punishing climate. It will not only transport crew and provisions, but also assist in scientific data collection and sample transport — making it an integral part of the expedition.
Colette Healy, Marketing Director at BMW UK, says:
“This challenge is an extraordinary test of endurance and determination — qualities that resonate deeply with us at BMW. The BMW iX is built to perform in the toughest conditions, making it the perfect partner for such an ambitious endeavour.”
Powered by Passion: Gym King and SKIRR Adventures
Supporting Edgley on land and sea are two more mission-aligned partners. Performance wear brand Gym King, driven by a mantra of “Nothing Beats Belief,” embodies the mental resilience required for this journey. CEO Jay Parker highlights Edgley’s grit as “the perfect embodiment of our brand’s values.”
Meanwhile, SKIRR Adventures, founded by legendary solo sailor Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, will provide a 68-foot expedition yacht to act as Edgley’s mobile basecamp. Their seasoned crew will monitor tides, weather, and sea ice to ensure Edgley’s safety and success as he swims.
Sir Robin himself notes:
“Just sailing these waters is tough enough. For Ross to swim them, day after day, this truly is the ultimate test of human endurance.”
A Legacy in Motion
For Edgley, The Great Icelandic Swim is more than a challenge — it’s a personal odyssey. Inspired by stories of Icelandic seafarers told by his grandfather, this modern-day saga will blend ancient adventure with cutting-edge science.
“Iceland is one of nature’s great masterpieces,” says Edgley. “Swimming around it is a rare opportunity to blend sport, science and storytelling in a way that can make a meaningful difference.”
As the world watches on from 16 May 2025, this journey will become a global testament to what’s possible when human spirit, science, and sustainability collide — with every mile swum, every species recorded, and every data point gathered lighting the way toward a cleaner, better-protected ocean.
Follow Ross Edgley’s progress from 16 May 2025 as he swims into the record books — and into history.
