  • Improved aerodynamic performance benefits operating efficiency
  • Extensive use of recycled ‘green’ materials

Peugeot 208 Green

The new Peugeot 208 was conceived from the outset as car that had to reflect Peugeot’s eco-credentials.

The  launch of the compact, lightweight and exceptionally efficient three-cylinder petrol engine powering two of the three 208 models is one example of the marque’s responsible and sustainable environmental credentials.

Every aspect of the 208’s design and development process was focused on a significant reduction in overall weight, resulting in the 208 tipping the scales from as low as 975 kg. That figure represents a remarkable 173 kg weight reduction, compared to the equivalent 207 model it replaces.

Similarly, the sleek design of this trend-setting new compact hatchback offers commensurate benefits in terms of aerodynamic performance, with the drag coefficient dropping to as low as 0.29, depending on model.

That slippery shape allows the 208 to cut through the air more efficiently, which benefits both efficiency and the overall cost of ownership. However, the innovative hatchback also pioneers new aspects of eco-oriented design.

For instance, no less than 25 percent of  the 208 hatchback’s 170 kg polymer weight total (excluding rubber) is made up of so-called green materials. This represents a truly commendable improvement on the approximately 7 percent achieved by the previous 207.

Most notably, the Peugeot 208 features a rear bumper produced entirely from recycled materials, which is a world first. Traditionally these materials are only used for concealed parts.

Fitment of this type of bumper alone will allow a saving of 1 600 tons of oil per year. In addition, the radiator frame and fan are also made up of completely recycled materials.

Green materials also make up numerous other parts or functions of the new 208, including the wheel arch linings and soundproofing materials, as well a the boot mat, steering wheel, seats, engine cover and air filter housing.

The result is a new-generation hatchback that takes an holistic approach to eco-responsible design and execution by linking latest-generation technologies and an aerodynamic shape to an ever increasing use of recycled and recyclable materials.
