OMODA has marked a highly successful first year in South Africa, achieving an impressive sales performance in April 2024 and surpassing several well-established brands in the process.
For the first time since its official launch in South Africa a year ago, OMODA reported its sales figures to the industry representative body Naamsa, with a notable contribution of 12.8% to the Chery Group’s record-breaking total of 2,009 registrations for the month.
“In April 2024, the Chery Group recorded its highest-ever sales figures in South Africa, securing sixth place overall among manufacturers for the month and fourth in the passenger-vehicle segment. OMODA, operating as an independent brand within the Chery Group, was a key driver of this historic achievement,” stated Tony Liu, Executive Deputy General Manager of Chery/OMODA & JAECOO South Africa.
Among individual brands, as opposed to manufacturers, OMODA ranked a commendable 19th out of the 54 marques currently competing in South Africa’s new-vehicle market. This premium brand outperformed several mainstream automakers from Japan and Europe.

“As we celebrate our first anniversary in South Africa, we are delighted with the market’s response to our rapidly growing brand. Every single one of OMODA’s local sales in April was through the dealer channel, which, unlike bulk fleet sales, strongly indicates private-buyer confidence. In essence, each sale is a vote of confidence in our brand,” remarked Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager for OMODA & JAECOO.
This achievement is particularly noteworthy considering OMODA’s local range currently consists solely of the six-model C5 lineup, including the limited-edition GT variant.
A year ago, South Africa became the first country on the African continent to welcome the OMODA brand, with the C5’s distinctive silhouette immediately making an impression in a market filled with generic crossover designs.
Looking ahead, the OMODA range will expand later in 2024 with the introduction of the highly anticipated C9 luxury flagship and the fully electric E5, while the recently unveiled C7 is also slated for a local debut in the near future.
