The UK government is encouraging councils to adopt the National Parking Platform (NPP) app, designed to simplify parking payments across multiple locations. While the app promises convenience for many, it poses a real challenge for older drivers, who may struggle with technology or prefer traditional payment methods. Start Rescue, a leading breakdown provider, warns that this shift could inadvertently force thousands of older motorists to park further from their destinations, sometimes in less safe areas.
The NPP app allows users to pay for parking via a single smartphone platform instead of juggling multiple apps for different car parks. “This is a fundamentally sound idea,” said Lee Puffett, Managing Director of Start Rescue, “but it must recognise that many drivers, particularly older drivers, prefer to pay with cash, bank card, or Apple Pay. Weak signals, poor lighting, and unclear signage can make app-based parking difficult.”
Recent Ofcom data highlights that only 68% of people aged 65 and over use a smartphone to access the internet. With more than 9.2 million drivers in this age group according to the DVLA, this indicates that approximately 2.9 million older drivers may be unable to use app-only parking solutions. Rob Heard, Chair of the Older Drivers Forum, emphasises the importance of retaining alternative payment methods: “Not all drivers feel comfortable relying solely on digital services. Councils must ensure a fully inclusive approach so everyone can park safely and conveniently.”
Start Rescue, part of the Call Assist family, supports motorists across the UK and Europe and has achieved Which? Recommended Provider status for seven consecutive years, an unmatched record in vehicle recovery. Recognised for excellence by both Trustpilot and Defaqto, Start Rescue underscores the importance of services that cater to all drivers, not just those who are tech-savvy. As the NPP app rollout continues, the message is clear: convenience should not come at the expense of accessibility or safety for older drivers.
