SUNDERLAND, UK (June 12th, 2025) — Best known for their world-class engineering, manufacturing precision, and supply chain excellence, the team at Nissan’s Sunderland Plant has spent the past year proving that their skills extend well beyond the production line.
In a powerful show of corporate citizenship, employees at the UK’s largest car manufacturing plant have contributed more than 3,000 hours of community service across the North East over the last 12 months. From lending a hand at local food banks to rolling up their sleeves for playground builds and wildlife conservation, the initiative underscores Nissan’s deep commitment to social impact and sustainable community development.
“At Nissan Sunderland, we’re hugely proud of the technical capabilities within our 6,000-strong team,” said Michael Jude, HR Director at the plant. “But that pride multiplies when you see those same skills improving lives in the community. Whether it’s painting a school hall or streamlining a food distribution centre, the work ethic and ingenuity of our people continues to shine.”
The initiative, which allows every team member to volunteer for up to two days each year, has seen employees support more than 100 local charities, schools, and community centres. Notable contributions included painting and decorating public spaces, constructing play areas, and even building an otter den — a project that highlights the team’s creative application of manufacturing skills in support of local biodiversity.
In the run-up to the festive season, Nissan staff also assisted Durham Food Bank, using their supply chain know-how to streamline donations and ensure efficient delivery to families in need.

Financial Literacy for the Next Generation
Looking ahead, the plant is steering its focus towards financial education, through a new collaboration with charity RedSTART. The initiative will see Nissan employees — many of whom work in complex financial and operational roles — teaching basic money management to school-aged children.
The programme aims to empower young people with essential life skills, covering topics such as budgeting, saving, and financial decision-making.
“This is about more than giving back — it’s about creating long-term impact,” added Jude. “Our people are gaining valuable new experiences and connecting with the community in meaningful ways. It’s a perfect alignment with our EV36Zero vision, where sustainability, inclusion, and innovation go hand-in-hand.”
Employee-Led, Community-Driven
One of the standout features of the volunteering programme is its employee-led approach, which empowers staff to nominate charities and causes close to their hearts. Among these is 4LOUIS, a Sunderland-based charity supporting bereaved families through the provision of memory boxes and care packages.
Victoria Usher of 4LOUIS said: “Nissan’s ongoing support has been a lifeline. Being nominated by an employee not only brought us much-needed volunteers, but also reminded us of the power of local connections. The impact of their help goes beyond words.”
As Nissan Sunderland continues to play a central role in the UK’s transition to a greener future, its commitment to community is a reminder that true sustainability starts at home — with people, purpose, and proactive support.
