Making its global debut at the 2025 Shanghai International Auto Show, the all-new JAECOO J5 marks a pivotal moment for the up-and-coming SUV brand. This sleek and compact crossover is the latest model to emerge from the automaker’s global expansion drive—and it’s heading to South Africa with a clear mission: to democratise the premium SUV experience.
Positioned just below the larger JAECOO J7, the new J5 broadens the brand’s appeal with a more accessible price point while maintaining the high standards of luxury, safety, and technology that JAECOO has quickly become known for.
Compact in Size, Big on Substance
Despite its urban-friendly footprint—measuring just 4,380 mm in length—the J5 punches well above its weight in terms of features and refinement. Under the bonnet, a sprightly 1.5-litre petrol engine delivers 115 kW and 230 N.m of torque, managed by a smooth and efficient continuously variable transmission (CVT) driving the front wheels.
Drivers can tailor their experience with selectable Normal, Eco, and Sport drive modes, while future additions to the lineup—including plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery-electric (BEV) variants—promise even greater efficiency and technological sophistication.

Premium Experience, Everyday Attainability
“The JAECOO J5 represents the next chapter for our brand in South Africa,” says Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager for OMODA & JAECOO South Africa. “It brings the same premium quality and design sophistication that our customers expect, now in a more compact and attainable package.”
Indeed, the cabin delivers a thoroughly modern and premium experience. From the wireless charging pad and voice command functionality to an optional panoramic sunroof, the J5 is designed with everyday luxury in mind. Available features include leather upholstery, ventilated seats, ambient lighting, and automatic climate control, placing it in direct competition with far more expensive rivals.
Safety First, Always
JAECOO has built a reputation on its commitment to passenger safety, and the J5 continues that tradition. While full safety ratings will be revealed closer to launch, the brand draws confidence from the J7 SHS plug-in hybrid’s recent five-star Euro NCAP score.
The J5 is equipped with a full suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), including adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance, and blind-spot detection—helping to ensure peace of mind whether you’re navigating busy city streets or venturing off the beaten track.
Built for the City—and Beyond
While perfectly suited to urban life, the J5 is more than just a stylish city slicker. It offers robust underbody protection for rougher roads and boasts towing capability that will appeal to weekend explorers and lifestyle-oriented buyers alike.
“The new J5 is designed to meet the needs of modern South Africans who want more from their daily drive,” adds Gahagan. “It’s practical, versatile, and refined—without compromising on quality or safety.”
Coming Soon
Set to arrive in South Africa in the second quarter of 2025, the JAECOO J5 is poised to shake up the compact SUV segment. Local specifications and pricing will be announced closer to the launch, but if the global reveal is anything to go by, South Africans can expect a compelling blend of luxury, technology, and value in a fresh new form.
For those in search of premium motoring that doesn’t break the bank, the J5 could very well be the game-changer they’ve been waiting for.
