Johannesburg, 16 January 2026 – Hyundai Motor Company’s bold push into electric mobility has received a major international vote of confidence. The all-electric Hyundai IONIQ 9 has been named World’s Best Large SUV at the 2026 Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year (WWCOTY) Awards, cementing Hyundai’s position as a leading player in the premium electric SUV segment.
Judged by a distinguished panel of 84 female automotive journalists from 54 countries, the WWCOTY Awards evaluate vehicles on design, safety, performance, innovation, and sustainability. The IONIQ 9’s win underscores Hyundai’s growing influence in the global electric vehicle landscape, particularly among luxury SUV offerings.
While the IONIQ 9 is not yet available in South Africa, the international recognition has already generated strong local interest. Stanley Anderson, CEO of Hyundai Automotive South Africa, welcomed the accolade.
“This award is a powerful endorsement of Hyundai’s global electric vehicle strategy,” Anderson said. “The IONIQ 9 represents the future of large-format electric SUVs. While it is not yet part of our South African range, local motorists are increasingly global in their expectations. We are committed to ensuring they are not left behind as Hyundai continues to lead in automotive innovation on the world stage.”
As Hyundai’s flagship large electric SUV, the IONIQ 9 has impressed international audiences with its commanding design, spacious technology-rich interior, and advanced electric platform. The global recognition reflects Hyundai’s ability to combine premium comfort with cutting-edge innovation, setting new benchmarks for electric mobility worldwide.
Anderson added that any potential introduction of world-class vehicles to South African customers requires careful consideration, balancing market timing, business sense, and local mobility needs.
Further announcements regarding Hyundai’s future electric vehicle plans for South Africa will be shared as they develop, as the brand continues to explore ways to bring global innovations to local roads.
