East London, South Africa – 19 July 2025
The fifth round of the 2025 GR Cup—Toyota South Africa’s fiercely contested one-make racing series—served up high drama and unpredictability at the historic East London Grand Prix Circuit. With the coastal circuit’s blend of flat-out bravery and technical precision, coupled with an unexpected turn in the weather, the weekend became a true litmus test for talent, tenacity, and adaptability.

Though forecasts had promised clear skies, Friday night rain soaked the circuit and left the infield soggy and treacherous. Race day dawned damp and windy, with gusts battering the track and red flags disrupting the schedule. Amidst delays and multiple incidents, organisers were forced to condense the weekend into a single 12-lap feature race—but what a race it was.

Despite the setbacks, enthusiastic fans lined the fences, braving the weather to witness an action-packed day of GR Cup Media Challenge, GR Cup Dealer Challenge, and GR86 Development Academy competition.

GR Cup Media Challenge: Abdool Unstoppable Amidst the Storm

Nabil Abdool (SuperSport) continued his immaculate run in the Media Challenge, grabbing his fifth pole of the season and converting it into his ninth straight class win. With the track slick and the stakes high, Abdool delivered a flawless qualifying lap of 1:43.477—his first time tackling wet conditions on semi-slicks.

“It was my first time out in the rain on these tyres,” said Abdool. “Every corner was unpredictable, but we put it together when it mattered.”

Though Devon Scott (Dealer Challenge) kept him honest in the early laps, Abdool pulled clear once he hit traffic, ultimately claiming the overall race win. Behind him, Phuti Mpyane (TimesLIVE) delivered one of his strongest drives of the season to claim second, with Kyle Kock (CAR Magazine) rounding out the podium. Charl Bosch (Citizen) and Lawrence Minnie (AutoTrader) followed, while Willem van de Putte (IOL) recovered from a mid-race spin to complete the class results.

GR Cup Dealer Challenge: Scott Takes Command in Difficult Conditions

In a field peppered with GR Corollas and manual GR Yaris models, Devon Scott (GR Driving Academy) set the pace with a class-best qualifying time of 1:44.012—despite having never driven the East London circuit before.

“The weather made things tricky, but that’s what makes racing fun,” Scott reflected. “There was real opportunity to find the edge.”

Scott surged ahead from the rolling start and stayed out of trouble, crossing the line second overall and first in class. Mario de Sousa (Motus Toyota) kept things spicy in the opening laps, battling with Media Challenge competitor Kyle Kock in a move that saw both drivers navigating the hairpin side-by-side. Werner Venter (NMI Toyota Menlyn/Centurion) completed the class podium after a solid drive.

Further back, the midfield saw spirited battles between Theo Brits, Dylan Jones, Roelof de Villiers and Nico Boonzaaier, with a few caught out by the still-damp circuit and aggressive winds. Riaan du Ru, unfortunately, was sidelined following a Qualifying crash—thankfully emerging uninjured.

GR86 Development Academy: Coetzee Controls the Narrative

Jason Coetzee showed true class in the GR86 Development Academy, topping qualifying with a best lap of 1:43.921 before delivering a lights-to-flag victory. His performance was calculated and commanding—particularly impressive given the mixed conditions and pressure of the combined grid.

Kent Swartz continued to impress with his pace and adaptability, coming home second in class while holding his own among more seasoned challengers. Khaya Ngwenya showed maturity beyond his experience, rounding out the podium with a clean and consistent drive. Ethan Bostander, Vatiswa Mokhonoana and Gabriel Fernandez completed the finishing order after a challenging race in tricky conditions.

Looking Ahead: Cape Showdown Beckons

While Saturday’s schedule may have been cut short, the performances on display confirmed what the GR Cup has become known for: close competition, raw talent, and racing that thrills in every weather condition. As the series now shifts focus to Round 6 at Killarney International Raceway in Cape Town on 13 September 2025, the championship battles remain wide open with just two rounds to go.

Expect more fireworks, more rivalries, and more edge-of-the-seat action as South Africa’s premier one-make racing series heads into the home stretch.
