On April 17, 2024, exactly sixty years after its debut at the World’s Fair in New York, the Ford Mustang is commemorated globally for its iconic status and continuous evolution. The Mustang, Ford’s longest-standing model in continuous production, was initially introduced as an affordable blend of luxury and performance in a sporty package. Today, it marks its 60th anniversary with worldwide celebrations, reflecting on its enduring appeal and significance in the automotive world.
Doreen Mashinini, General Manager for Marketing at Ford South Africa, stated, “The Mustang remains one of the most iconic, recognizable, and revered cars globally. The upcoming seventh-generation Mustang continues to embody the original’s spirit with its luxurious yet performance-oriented design.”
Since its introduction, the Mustang has achieved remarkable success. In its first year in the U.S., it set a record with sales exceeding 418,812 units, hitting the 1 million mark by the following year and surpassing 10 million sales by 2018. It has dominated the U.S. sports car segment for six decades and has been the best-selling sports car globally for over a decade.
In South Africa, the Mustang has seen similar popularity, especially since the introduction of the sixth-generation model in 2016—the first to be produced in right-hand drive. This version and its special editions like the Bullitt, Mach 1, and California Special have become favorites among car enthusiasts.

Mashinini highlighted, “In the past eight years, we’ve sold 4,060 Mustangs in South Africa, capturing an average 84 percent of the sports car market share. With a strong and growing base of owners and enthusiasts, we are excited to continue this legacy with the launch of the new Mustang GT and the Mustang Dark Horse.”
The 60th-anniversary celebrations also introduced a special logo in Vermillion Red and Ebony Black, inspired by the original Mustang’s badging and wheel center caps from 1964. This precedes the launch of the seventh-generation Mustang in South Africa, featuring an edgier design and the most advanced, driver-centric cockpit to date.
The Mustang GT will boast a powerful fourth-generation 5.0-litre Coyote V8 engine, offering multiple driving modes for optimal performance customization. The Mustang Dark Horse will introduce a more sinister aesthetic paired with enhanced power and chassis tuning, designed for both aesthetics and track performance. This model will also feature a sporty cockpit with a suede-wrapped steering wheel and a customizable 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster, underscoring Ford’s commitment to innovation and driving excitement.
