2011 JOHANNESBURG INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW

RENAULT CLIO
Unrivalled features, value – and distinctive style

  • Latest-generation Clio looks stylish, reflects strong value
  • Freshestyling reflects latest Renault design language
  • Interior focuses on user-friendly features, comfort and safety
  • Integrated navigation by TomTom unique in the B-segment
  • Satisfying performance and economy from 1,6-litre engine
  • Pricing reflects strong value, includes service plan

The current generation Renault Clio is a striking evolution of the acclaimed Clio 3 that draws on the distinctive styling trends set by Renault’s exciting passenger car offering.

The three-model line-up curently comprises the five-door 1.6 S, the Clio 1.6 Avantage, and the Clio Avantage 1.6 Automatic.

The Clio appeals to upwardly mobile individuals seeking the perfect balance between performance, equipment and value for money. It delivers a compelling C-segment package for the price of a B-segment hatchback.

DYNAMIC STYLING

The Clio’s dynamic styling cues endow it with a truly individual character, drawing on the design highlights of the New Renault Mégane.

Its exhilarating shape is defined by the contoured headlamps that extend downward to the grille, complemented by the black headlamp masks and a new front bumper. At the rear, the waistline is extended with new light clusters and a revised bumper design.

The Clio’s streamlined silhouette is both functional and visually arresting, while allowing impressive cabin space, thanks to the rear shoulder room of 1 343 mm, accentuated by
886 mm of generous headroom at the  rear.

INTEGRATED NAVIGATION

The interior has an upmarket execution, including soft-touch finishes, but the biggest drawcard is the fully integrated Carminat TomTom satellite navigation system, fitted as standard on both Avantage models – a  first for this segment.

Access to the unit is via a bright and easy to read 15 cm colour screen, positioned high up on the dashboard for optimal driver visibility. It is fully updatable by supplied means of a 2Go SD card.

Navigation instructions are transmitted through the car’s speakers, and volume is adjusted via steering wheel-mounted satellite controls. In addition, a separate remote control is provided for ultimate ease-of-use and safer driving.

The Carminat TomTom displays traffic information, speed restrictions and speed camera alerts, while the screen also serves as the central multimedia display for the radio, MP3 playlists and Bluetooth cellphone integration.

COMPREHENSIVE FEATURES

The Clio S and Avantage models are fitted with a multitude of features that set them apart from the B-segment regulars.

The Clio S gets a eye-catching styling package that includes a rear roof spoiler and striking decals. The car  also features comprehensive colour coding.

Standard equipment includes cruise control, a trip computer, remote central locking, electric front windows, a MP3-compatible CD receiver with steering column-mounted satellite controls, a height adjustable steering wheel and driver’s seat, and heated mirriors.

The Clio S also gets fog lamps, cornering lights, and a comprehensive array of active and passive safety features. These include front, side and curtain airbags, ABS brakes with EBA and EBD, front and rear head restraints, Isofix child seat anchor points, and auto-locking doors.

The two Avantage models offer all the standard features of the Clio S, except the corrnering lights, body decals and roof spoiler. They gain aluminium-look door handles, though, as well as some additional features.

These include the upgraded TomTom LIVE navigation system, with real-time live traffice and weather feeds, as well as a reroute function. There is also a muiltimedia connection box that includes USB and auxiliary inputs. They are also fitted with Bluetooth cellphone preparation, and a 60:40 split rear seat.

The Avantage versions also get full climate control, together with light and rain sensors for automatic operation of the headlights and the windscreen wipers,

All three Clios offer a revised electric power steering system for improved precision and refinement, while the 16-inch alloy wheels fiited with 195/50 R16 tyres are standard across the range, too.

The Clios retain the familiar 1,6-litre 16-valve engine, renowned for its impressive combination of performance and economy. Maximum power comes to 83 kW at 6 000 r/min, matched to a torque peak of 151 Nm at 4 250 r/min.

This manual Clios are credited with a combined cycle fuel consumption of 6,7 l/100 km, along with a CO2 emissions rating of 157 g/km. In the case of the Avantage 1.6 Auto, those figures come to 7,5 litre/100 km and 179 g/km respectively.

In line with their dynamic positioning, the Clios offer zippy performance. The manual versions  accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 10,2 sec, and achieve a top speed of 190 km/h. The automatic model has a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 12,2 sec, and a 186 km/h top speed.

Adding further value is the inclusion of Renault Confiance, an all-encompassing care package specifically designed to ensure continued peace-of-mind motoring.

The Clio S is supported with a three-year/60 000 km service plan, while Avantage models gain a four-year/60 000 km service plan. All Clios are sold with a five-year/150 000 km warranty. Service intervals are stipulated at 15 000 km.
