The dust is rising, the revs are climbing, and competition is fierce at the Sandwani Game Lodge in Gauteng as the elimination rounds of the Nissan Spirit of Africa Trophy 2025 roar into action. Now in its 21st year, this legendary off-road gauntlet is once again proving why it’s earned a reputation as Africa’s toughest 4×4 challenge.
A total of 400 two-person teams from across the country have descended on Sandwani, all with one goal in mind: securing a coveted place among the Top 20 finalists, to be revealed after 21 June. But they won’t be tackling the unforgiving terrain alone. This year marks a turning point for the event, as competitors pilot the newly launched Nissan Navara PRO-4X Warrior by Premcar – a brawny, purpose-built off-roader born to conquer the continent’s wildest trails.
Engineered to Endure
The PRO-4X Warrior is no ordinary Navara. It’s the result of a bold collaboration between Nissan and Australian engineering outfit Premcar, brought to life locally at Nissan’s Rosslyn plant near Pretoria. Fitted with a 2.5-litre DDTi turbo-diesel engine, the Warrior generates 140 kW and 450 Nm of torque, backed by a suite of bespoke off-road upgrades – from revised suspension and ground clearance to reinforced bash plates and heavy-duty tyres.
As the official competition vehicle for the 2025 event, the Warrior is being tested in exactly the conditions it was designed for: deep ruts, rock-littered climbs, sandy sprint stages, and everything in between. With each obstacle on the Spirit of Africa course, the Warrior is not just transporting competitors – it’s actively enabling their success.
“The Warrior is specifically engineered for exactly these kinds of intense, severe driving circumstances,” says Maciej Klenkiewicz, Country Managing Director for Nissan South Africa and Independent Markets Africa (IMA). “We can’t imagine better grounds for proving its capabilities than the Spirit of Africa.”
Legacy Meets Innovation
Founded by South African motorsport legend Sarel van der Merwe, the Spirit of Africa Trophy has spent over two decades forging a loyal following among amateur off-roaders and adrenaline-seekers alike. While the competition has evolved, the core ethos remains unchanged: a fair, skill-based showdown on equal ground.
The elimination round, which began on 22 April, features a series of technical and speed-based driving tests, each designed to assess the drivers’ ability to handle the vehicle under pressure – from hairpin-tight manoeuvres to fast-paced rally-style sprints across varied terrain.
And while competitors battle it out for a spot in the finals, a select group of media professionals recently had the chance to experience the challenge for themselves.

A Taste of the Terrain: Media Participation Day
On Tuesday, 27 May 2025, 22 motoring journalists and influencers strapped into the Navara PRO-4X Warrior for a first-hand taste of the Spirit of Africa. Completing 12 of the full 16 events, participants faced four precision trials and eight timed speed challenges – all under true competition conditions.
Tensions ran high and the stakes were real, with penalties levied for infractions and time shaved off for near-perfect execution. In the end, Brendon Staniforth (Maroela Media) and Oliver Keohane (Leisure Wheels) took top honours with a commanding 948 points out of 1,200. Close behind were Reuben van Niekerk (Wheels24) and Denis Droppa (Business Day) in second, followed by Willem van de Putte (IOL) and Anton Willemse (4×4 Africa) in third.
It wasn’t just about competitive bragging rights – the day served as a powerful showcase of the Warrior’s performance, offering media professionals an authentic feel for the vehicle’s agility, strength and off-road control.
Looking Ahead: The Road to the Finals
With the elimination round now in full swing, all eyes are on the leaderboard as teams race to secure a place in the finals. For many, it’s the culmination of months of preparation; for others, a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. But for all, it’s a journey made possible by a machine that shares their spirit of resilience and passion for the path less travelled.
“The Spirit of Africa is a true reflection of Nissan’s heritage and commitment in South Africa,” Klenkiewicz adds. “Seeing the Warrior – proudly assembled at our Rosslyn plant – go head-to-head with Africa’s toughest conditions is not only a moment of pride, but a powerful demonstration of what we stand for: capability, endurance, and a deep connection to the people and places that drive us forward.”
As the final day of elimination draws near, the only certainty is that both competitors and their Warriors will have earned every inch of progress in the wild heart of Gauteng.
