In 2025, the Volvo S60 reaches a significant milestone — its 25th anniversary. Unveiled at the dawn of the new millennium, the first-generation S60 redefined what it meant to drive a Volvo, blending Scandinavian design elegance with a newfound spirit of performance and unwavering safety. More than just a mid-size executive sedan, the S60 challenged long-held perceptions of Volvo’s image, firmly establishing itself as a dynamic competitor among Europe’s luxury marques.
A Bold New Chapter for Volvo
When the S60 debuted in 2000, it marked a deliberate departure from the conservative styling of its predecessor, the S70. Crafted under the visionary design leadership of Peter Horbury, the S60 introduced Volvo’s fresh design language—a sleeker, sportier silhouette with a coupe-like profile that immediately captured attention. The model’s sharp lines and distinctive “shoulder” beltline, which extended from front to rear, gave the car an unmistakable presence on the road, a design feature that still echoes in today’s Volvo lineup.
The S60 was built on Volvo’s versatile P2 platform, shared with the larger S80 and the then-new XC90 SUV. Powering the S60 was a range of five-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, known for their smooth delivery and distinctive, memorable sound. The T5 variant, especially in its most potent form, offered an impressive 191 kW and 350 Nm of torque—delivering a blend of spirited performance with efficiency that appealed to driving enthusiasts.
The Rise of the S60 R
Volvo’s performance credentials truly crystallized with the 2004 launch of the S60 R, a formidable successor to the legendary 850 T-5R and 850 R. Packing 221 kW and 400 Nm of torque, the S60 R was no ordinary family sedan; it was a serious contender in the performance segment, capable of challenging rivals from Germany and beyond. It underscored Volvo’s engineering prowess, proving that safety and dynamic driving could co-exist without compromise.
Today, the S60 R’s performance ethos lives on in the electrified T8 Recharge models, which combine efficiency with exhilarating power. The current S60 T8 Recharge delivers a breathtaking 340 kW and 709 Nm of torque, accelerating to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds. While the sedan is not currently sold in South Africa, this potent hybrid powertrain is embraced locally in the acclaimed XC60 and XC90 Recharge SUVs, symbolizing Volvo’s transition towards electrification without sacrificing the driving experience.

Safety at the Core
True to Volvo’s DNA, safety was paramount in the first-generation S60. The car came equipped with an extensive array of safety innovations, many ahead of their time. Features such as front and rear crumple zones, a collapsible three-stage steering column, and dual-threshold airbags ensured occupant protection scaled to the severity of an impact. Side impact protection was enhanced through strategically placed airbags, including curtain airbags extending to rear passengers.
The S60 also introduced Volvo’s Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), which dramatically reduced neck injuries in rear-end collisions. Combined with anti-submarine seats designed to prevent occupants from sliding under seatbelts, these features earned the S60 a four-star Euro NCAP rating in 2001. Safety experts praised its robust safety cage and comprehensive occupant protection, especially in side impacts, further cementing Volvo’s reputation as a pioneer in automotive safety.
Enduring Design and Legacy
The S60’s influence extends beyond its production years, with design cues persisting in Volvo’s modern lineup. The signature beltline and tapering taillights introduced in the S60 have been refined but remain identifiable in today’s SUVs like the XC40, XC60, and XC90. Inside, the S60 set new standards for Volvo’s interiors, prioritising driver engagement with a clean, intuitive cockpit and high-quality materials—qualities that remain cornerstones of Volvo’s design philosophy.
Over its nine-year production run, nearly 582,000 units of the first-generation S60 were sold worldwide. This impressive figure speaks to the model’s global appeal and its success in reshaping Volvo’s image from a purely safety-first marque to one that balanced style, performance, and innovation.
Looking Ahead: The Future of the 60 Series
The 25th anniversary of the S60 is not only a celebration of a landmark model but a reflection of Volvo’s evolution towards an electrified and sustainable future. The pioneering spirit that defined the original S60 continues to inspire the brand’s commitment to innovation, safety, and Scandinavian design excellence as Volvo aims to become fully electric in the coming years.
“The S60 heralded a new era for the brand, donning a new look for the 21st century without sacrificing the key tenets that make a Volvo a Volvo: safety, innovation, and strong performance,” said Felipe Yagi, Head of Marketing and Communications at Volvo Car South Africa. “Though the S60 is no longer available locally, the values it introduced remain central to our line-up, especially in models like the XC60. We are proud to celebrate this important anniversary and look forward to continuing to innovate for our customers, as we did all those years ago.”
For those who have experienced the S60 across its 25-year journey, it represents more than a car. It embodies a promise—a promise of trust, innovation, and an uncompromising connection between driver and road that only a Volvo can deliver.
